Chapter 7 - The Traitor Unmasked

Flashbang grenades detonated in the center of the living room with a deafening CRACK and a blinding flash of white light.

Elena was thrown backward against the desk, her ears ringing violently, her vision obscured by thick grey smoke.

"Dante!" she screamed, but her own voice was drowned out by the roar of high-caliber automatic weapons.

Dante was off the floor in a fraction of a second, rolling behind the stone hearth, pulling a hidden 9mm handgun from beneath the sofa, firing three rounds through the dense smoke toward the entryway.

"Elena! Get down!" he roared over the gunfire.

Three men in full tactical gear rushed through the destroyed doorway, their submachine guns spraying the stone fireplace with heavy lead, shattering the masonry into flying shards.

Out of the smoke behind them stepped a man in an elegant grey cashmere coat.

He was in his late fifties, with sleek silver hair, a manicured beard, and cold, calculating grey eyes. In his right hand, he held a silenced pistol.

It was Marco Vane, Dante's senior captain—the man who had run the Salvatore family's logistics operations for twenty years, the man Dante considered a surrogate uncle.

"Stand down, Dante," Marco said, his voice smooth, echoing over the ringing in Elena's ears. "You're surrounded by twelve men. There is no boat here. No secondary team."

Dante crouched behind the hearth, his gun leveled at Marco's chest, his eyes burning with a lethal, terrifying hatred. "Marco. You son of a bitch."

"I am a businessman, Dante," Marco said calmly, stepping over the shattered wood of the front door. "Your father was a businessman. But you... you became obsessed with honor. You became obsessed with pride. The Volkov network offered us sixty percent of the East Coast shipping routes if we handed over Michael Callahan's ledgers."

"Michael Callahan worked for you," Dante growled, his voice dropping into a guttural snarl. "You hired him to steal the drives."

"Of course I did," Marco chuckled softly. "Michael was weak, desperate, and heavily in debt. I promised him five million dollars to divert the files to my private server. But the fool panicked when he realized what was on those drives. He encrypted the master key onto a physical drive and ran to his ex-wife."

Marco turned his cold grey eyes toward the corner where Elena was huddled behind the desk.

"And now," Marco said, "the ex-wife is going to give it to me."

"Touch her," Dante growled, stepping out from behind the stone hearth, his gun pointed straight at Marco's face, "and I will tear your heart out of your chest with my bare hands."

Four tactical lasers instantly locked onto Dante's chest and neck.

"Drop the weapon, Dante," Marco said softly. "Or I will have them put a bullet through the little girl sleeping in the back room."

Dante froze.

The air in the cabin went dead quiet.

Dante looked at the bedroom door where Sophia was hidden. He looked at Elena pinned against the desk.

Slowly, agonizingly, Dante lowered his handgun and dropped it onto the floor.

Marco smiled, a cruel, satisfied curve of his thin lips. "A prince brought low by a woman and a child. Your father would be deeply disappointed."

Marco gestured to two of his tactical operators. "Tie him to the heavy timber post near the fire. If he moves, shoot him in the knees."

The men lunged forward, slamming Dante against the heavy central support beam of the cabin, binding his thick wrists with heavy industrial zip-ties, pulling them tight until the plastic bit into his skin. Dante didn't fight back; his blue eyes were fixed entirely on Elena, transmitting a silent, desperate message: Stay quiet. Live.

Marco walked slowly toward Elena, his polished leather shoes crunching over the glass and splintered wood on the floor.

He stopped two feet from her, pulling his silenced pistol up, pressing the cold steel barrel against her forehead.

"Where is the key, Ms. Marchetti?" Marco asked softly. "You have five seconds before I spray your brains across this wall in front of your lover."

Elena looked past the gun barrel into Marco's cold grey eyes.

She looked at Dante bound to the post, his muscles straining against the plastic ties, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead, his face wild with pure, helpless agony.

She knew, in that terrifying second, that if she gave Marco the key, he would kill all three of them.

And she knew that she had one weapon left.

Elena slowly reached into her jeans pocket. She pulled out her hand, keeping her fist tightly closed.

"It's here," she whispered, her voice surprisingly steady. "The key to Unit B-402 at the Borough Plaza Terminal in Queens."

Marco's eyes flared with greedy triumph. "Ah. The storage locker. Brilliant."

He reached out his left hand to take it.

"I'll give it to you," Elena said, her blue eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. "On one condition."

Marco laughed. "You are in no position to bargain, girl."

"I am the only one who knows the four-digit security pin for the electronic gate," Elena lied smoothly, her voice ringing with absolute conviction. "Without that pin, the security system at Borough Plaza wipes the local server drive automatically if the padlock is cut. Michael set it up himself."

Marco paused, his eyebrow rising. "A wipe protocol."

"Try it without me," Elena spat, "and your forty-million-dollar ledgers turn into digital garbage in ten seconds."

Marco stared at her for three long seconds, evaluating the threat. Finally, he lowered his gun from her forehead.

"You are smarter than your husband was," Marco said. He turned to his team leader. "Put her in the armored truck. We go to Queens now."

"And Dante?" the team leader asked, gesturing toward the bound prince.

Marco looked back at Dante, a cold, ruthless smile on his face. "Leave him tied to the post. Set the cabin on fire. Let him burn in the woods he loves so much."
