PART 2 — The Man Upstairs

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Noah.

Not Meredith.

Not even Emma.

The only sound inside the house was the rain hitting the windows and the slow, steady ticking of the clock on the wall.

Noah stared at the staircase.

His mind was racing.

A stranger was upstairs.

Inside his house.

With his daughter.

And Meredith was acting like she knew exactly who it was.

That was the part that scared him the most.

Not the footsteps.

Not the hidden person.

Her reaction.

Meredith wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t frightened.

She looked caught.

“Meredith…”

Noah’s voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

“Who is upstairs?”

She didn’t answer.

Her lips parted slightly.

But no words came out.

Noah took a step toward the stairs.

Immediately, Emma grabbed his hand.

“Dad, don’t.”

He looked down.

His daughter’s eyes were full of fear.

“Sweetheart, I need to know who is in our house.”

Emma shook her head.

“He gets angry.”

Noah froze.

“Who?”

The little girl looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“Him.”

A cold feeling moved through Noah’s body.

He had spent years protecting Emma.

From scraped knees.

From nightmares.

From losing her mother.

From every sadness he could control.

But standing there in his own home, he realized something terrifying.

There was a part of his daughter’s life he knew nothing about.

Noah gently moved Emma behind him.

“Stay here.”

“No, Dad…”

Her voice trembled.

“Please.”

Noah turned around.

“Emma.”

He knelt.

“You’re safe.”

She shook her head.

“But last time you said that…”

Her voice broke.

Noah’s heart sank.

“Last time?”

Emma looked at Meredith.

The fear in her face said everything.

Noah slowly stood.

“What happened last time?”

Meredith finally spoke.

“Noah, stop this.”

He turned.

“Stop what?”

“Interrogating an eight-year-old child.”

His expression hardened.

“An eight-year-old child who is afraid of you.”

Meredith looked away.

That tiny movement told Noah more than words could.

Then the voice came again from upstairs.

“Meredith?”

This time louder.

More impatient.

Noah looked up.

“Come down.”

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was walking down the stairs.

Emma immediately pressed herself against Noah.

The man appeared.

Around forty years old.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Cold eyes.

And the moment Noah saw his face…

he recognized him.

His breathing stopped.

“Ryan?”

The man paused.

A faint smile appeared.

“Hello, Noah.”

For a moment, Noah couldn’t process what he was seeing.

Ryan Cole.

His former business partner.

The man who had disappeared two years earlier.

The man Noah believed had left the country after a massive financial scandal.

The man who had destroyed their company.

The man who had nearly ruined Noah’s life.

“What are you doing here?”

Noah’s voice was full of anger.

Ryan looked around the house.

Almost like he belonged there.

“Interesting welcome.”

Noah stepped forward.

“I asked you a question.”

Ryan smiled.

“Still the same.”

“What?”

“Always angry. Always protecting what you think is yours.”

Noah clenched his jaw.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Ryan looked at Emma.

And Noah immediately moved between them.

That was enough.

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

“Oh.”

He nodded slowly.

“So that’s what this is about.”

Noah stared.

“What did Meredith tell you?”

Ryan looked at Meredith.

And for the first time, Noah saw fear in her eyes.

Real fear.

“Meredith?”

She swallowed.

“Ryan…”

Noah turned sharply.

“You two know each other.”

No answer.

The silence confirmed it.

Noah laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“My wife knows a man who sneaks into my house.”

He looked at Meredith.

“And you didn’t think I should know?”

“It’s not what you think.”

Noah pointed toward the door.

“Then explain.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Maybe I should.”

“No.”

Noah’s voice cut through the room.

“You don’t speak.”

Ryan stopped.

Noah had never been a violent man.

But the rage inside him was becoming difficult to control.

“Tell me one thing.”

He looked at Meredith.

“Has this been happening while I was away?”

Her silence answered.

Noah felt something break inside him.

Four days.

He had left his daughter here.

With her.

He had trusted her.

And Emma had been afraid the entire time.

“How long?”

Meredith whispered:

“Noah…”

“How long has he been coming here?”

She looked down.

“I can explain.”

“How long?”

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Three months.”

The words hit harder than Noah expected.

Three months.

Three months of secrets.

Three months of his daughter seeing a man in their house.

Three months of Emma carrying fear alone.

Noah looked at Emma.

His voice softened.

“Sweetheart…”

She looked up.

“Did he hurt you?”

Emma didn’t answer.

Noah’s heart stopped.

“Emma.”

The little girl started crying.

“No…”

She whispered.

“He didn’t hurt me.”

Noah released a breath.

Then she continued.

“He just told me not to tell you.”

Noah looked at Ryan.

“What did you say to my daughter?”

Ryan shrugged.

“I talked to her.”

“You threatened her.”

“I warned her.”

Noah stepped closer.

“About what?”

Ryan smiled.

“About the truth.”

The room went silent.

Noah frowned.

“What truth?”

Ryan looked at Meredith.

And Meredith looked terrified.

“Tell him,” Ryan said.

“Tell him what happened.”

Noah’s eyes moved between them.

“What happened?”

Meredith shook her head.

“Ryan, don’t.”

“Don’t?”

Ryan laughed.

“You’ve been hiding for months.”

Noah’s patience disappeared.

“Someone better start talking.”

Ryan slowly reached into his jacket.

Noah immediately reacted.

“Don’t move.”

Ryan stopped.

Then slowly pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“What is that?”

Ryan looked at Noah.

“Something your wife didn’t want you to see.”

Noah stared at the envelope.

Then at Meredith.

She looked like she was about to collapse.

“What did you do?”

She whispered.

Noah picked up the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Of Meredith.

And another man.

Before Noah.

Before their marriage.

Before everything.

But that wasn’t what shocked him.

It was the date.

The photos were taken three years ago.

Three months before Emma’s mother died.

Noah’s hands started shaking.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

He looked at Ryan.

“You came here to show me this?”

Ryan nodded.

“I came because I found out Meredith was lying to you.”

Noah looked at Meredith.

“What lie?”

Her face went pale.

“Please…”

The word came out like a plea.

But Noah stepped back.

“Tell me.”

Meredith looked at Emma.

Then at Noah.

And finally whispered:

“Emma’s mother…”

She stopped.

Tears formed in her eyes.

“She didn’t die the way you think.”

Noah felt the room spin.

“What did you say?”

The rain outside became louder.

Ryan remained silent.

Meredith covered her mouth.

And Noah realized something.

The last three years of his life…

might have been built on a lie.

He looked at his daughter.

The little girl who had been scared.

The little girl who had tried to tell him.

The little girl everyone told him was imagining things.

And suddenly, Noah understood.

Emma wasn’t the one hiding something.

Everyone else was.

The question was…

May you like

how much had they hidden?

And how much worse was the truth?
