Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Monolith

The moment Lucas's hand slid inside his jacket pocket, the air in the courtroom shifted from tense to volatile.
The instant Daniel saw that specific movement, the warm, benevolent smile vanished from his face as if it had been wiped away by a blowtorch. The billionaire’s perfectly composed features violently drained of all color, turning ashen, pasty, and sheet-white in a fraction of a second. His aristocratic arrogance evaporated, replaced by a raw, naked terror so intense that his jaw went slack.
"Lucas—" Daniel started, his voice cracking loudly across the silent courtroom, entirely forgetting courtroom protocol. He half-rose from his chair, his hands slamming down onto the mahogany table with a loud thud. "Lucas, stop! Stop right there, son!"
Judge Thorne banged her gavel sharply. "Mr. Carter! Sit down immediately! Do not interrupt the witness—the child has the floor!"
"Your Honor, please, he's confused, he's been manipulated—!" Daniel stammered, sweat instantly beading along his hairline despite the chilled air conditioning. His chest rose and fell in jagged, violent gasps. The untouchable corporate titan was hyperventilating, his eyes darting frantically toward his lawyer, who looked equally bewildered by her client's abrupt psychological collapse.
"Quiet, Mr. Carter, or I will have the bailiff escort you out in handcuffs," Judge Thorne commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. She turned her kind, steady eyes back to the boy. "Go ahead, Lucas. Take your time. What is it you want to show the court?"
Emily sat frozen in her chair, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had no idea what her son was doing. She knew only that Lucas had been quiet lately—withdrawn, spending hours sketching in his notebook, hoarding old receipts in a rusted metal tin under his bed, and watching his father with eyes that seemed to see right through the expensive suits and the charitable foundations.
Lucas pulled his hand out of his jacket pocket.
He wasn't holding a weapon. He wasn't holding a toy.
In his small, cold fingers, he held a sleek, heavy-duty digital voice recorder—the black, professional model Daniel always kept locked in his leather briefcase for corporate board meetings and confidential executive acquisitions.
The moment the device caught the fluorescent light, Daniel let out a choked, desperate sound—half gasp, half animal whimper—and lunged forward over the railing.
"Give me that! Give it to me right now!" Daniel shrieked, sprinting toward the center aisle with the wild, frenzied panic of a cornered predator.
"Bailiff! Restrain him!" Judge Thorne shouted, standing up from her high chair in sheer alarm.

Two burly bailiffs intercepted Daniel halfway across the well of the court, tackling his arms behind his back and forcing him down hard onto the oak table. Daniel thrashed against them, his bespoke suit tearing at the shoulder seam, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.
"Before you make your final decision to take us away from our mother," Lucas continued, his voice never shaking, never breaking, ringing crystal clear through the chaos as he looked up at the trembling judge, "...there is a secret you need to hear."
