Dems Get BRUTAL Midterm Wake-Up Call - New Report GOOD News For GOP

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats banking on a massive federal "blue wave" to save their agenda just got a brutal reality check from their own preferred network. CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten issued a stark warning to the Democratic Party: your federal ambitions mean absolutely nothing if you continue to get locked out of power at the state level.

During a sobering segment with host Kate Bolduan, Enten broke down the hard numbers for the upcoming 2026 midterms, revealing a historic, century-long trend of Republican dominance across the nation's governorships and state legislatures.

THE GUBERNATORIAL RED WALL

While media narratives often focus on the White House and Congress, Enten emphasized that the real policymaking affecting everyday Americans—education, healthcare, local infrastructure, and taxation—happens at the state level. And right now, Republicans own the map.

  • The 2026 Projection: According to CNN's data, Republicans are projected to hold at least 26 governorships post-2026, with Democrats favored in only 20. The remaining four are toss-ups.

  • “At this point, it doesn’t look like Republicans on the net and the aggregate are actually going to lose any governorships," Enten explained. "In fact, when you add in those toss-ups, they may gain. So this should stand as a major wake-up call to Democrats."

Enten pointed out just how long Democrats have been bleeding power locally. The last time the Democratic Party held a majority of the nation's governorships was in 2010.

"This is now the longest streak in which Democrats did not hold a majority of governorships in at least a century," Enten stressed. "This is a massive problem for Democrats... that means Republicans are in fact forming and implementing most of the policies in the states, and therefore a lot of the policies nationwide."

STATE LEGISLATURES: A CENTURY-LONG STREAK

The nightmare for Democrats doesn't end at the governor's mansion. Even in states where Democrats manage to win the executive branch, their progressive agendas are frequently dead on arrival due to deeply entrenched, Republican-controlled state legislatures.

Bolduan pointed out that a governor's power directly depends on the makeup of the legislature, prompting Enten to drop another massive statistical bomb.

“Republicans have held a majority of state legislatures since 2012,” Enten stated. “And again, this is the longest such streak dating back at least a century in which Republicans have held the majority of the state legislatures."

Enten concluded that the GOP's grassroots strategy is continuing to pay massive dividends. By dominating the local elections that directly impact citizens' daily lives, Republicans have effectively sidelined Democrats from crucial, nationwide policymaking.

"Democrats will be locked out of holding power in positions that really do determine a lot," Enten warned.
