Chapter 6 - THE CLEANSE OF PORT HAVEN

By sunrise, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, crisp morning sky washed in pale shades of gold and blue.
Three black SUVs and four unmarked Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicles were parked outside the Port Haven Town Hall.
Inside the municipal office building, Senator Thomas Kane—a powerful, slick politician with a pristine hair-line and tailored suits—was preparing to address a small gathering of local reporters regarding coastal infrastructure investments.
The double doors at the back of the press room opened smoothly.
Roman Bellamy stepped into the room, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit, his shoulder bandaged beneath his shirt. Beside him walked two senior agents from the Department of Justice, accompanied by Eli Cross carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Senator Kane stopped speaking mid-sentence, his smile freezing on his face as he recognized the man walking down the center aisle.
“Mr. Bellamy,” Kane said, clearing his throat and forcing a polite, politician’s smile. “This is a private press conference—”
“It’s a public confession, Senator,” Roman interrupted, his voice echoing clearly across the room.
Eli stepped forward, placing a digital tablet onto the podium, pressing play on an audio file.
The speakers in the room filled with the clear, unedited voice of Victor Vance, recorded three hours earlier at the federal holding facility in Portland:
“...Senator Kane personally authorized the eighty-thousand-dollar transfer to Detective Miller to falsify Clara Pruitt’s medical intake files... Kane needed Roman Bellamy distracted by grief so his shipping consortium could seize control of the Port Haven freight docks...”
The reporters erupted into frantic hushed whispers, camera shutters clicking like a swarm of locusts.
Kane went entirely white, stepping back from the podium, looking wildly around the room for his security detail. But his personal guards had already been quietly disarmed and detained by the federal agents standing at the exits.
“These... these are the unhinged allegations of a convicted criminal!” Kane stammered, his hands shaking as he reached for his water glass.
“The federal grand jury in Boston already signed the arrest warrants twenty minutes ago, Thomas,” the lead DOJ agent announced, stepping up to the stage with handcuffs. “You have the right to remain silent.”
As the federal agents led Senator Kane away in front of live news cameras, Roman stood at the back of the auditorium, watching the collapse of the corrupt empire that had plagued his life for nearly a decade.
He turned and stepped out into the bright morning sunlight.
Eli walked beside him as they descended the granite steps of the town hall. “What about the rest of the waterfront operations, boss?” Eli asked quietly. “The freight routes, the shipping accounts... do we maintain control?”
Roman stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking across the street toward the sparkling waters of Port Haven Harbor.
“Transfer the legal ownership of all Port Haven dock properties to a community trust managed by Evelyn Pruitt,” Roman ordered smoothly. “Sell off the commercial shipping assets, close the offshore holding accounts, and distribute thirty percent of the profits into a permanent educational fund for the children of this town.”
Eli looked at him, surprised. “You’re walking away from the waterfront, Roman?”
May you like
Roman reached into his pocket and pulled out the small leather diary Clara had kept, running his thumb over its frayed edges.
“I spent nine years building a kingdom of shadows because I believed I had nothing left to lose,” Roman said softly. “Now I have everything to protect.”
