Chapter 3 - The Morning After

Ivan’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket before I even reached the elevator.

He pulled it out with an irritated scowl, expecting a call from his PR manager regarding the bus accident. Instead, the screen displayed sixteen missed calls from his Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Vance, and fifty-four urgent notification pings from the board of directors.

"Arthur?" Ivan answered, pressing the phone to his ear as he followed me into the hospital lobby. "What's going on? I'm at the hospital with—"

"Ivan! Where the hell are you?!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the speaker, so loud that even the nurses at the reception desk looked up. "The board is convening an emergency session right now! Aegis Holdings just called in the entirety of our Class-B debt obligations!"

Ivan stopped dead in his tracks, his face freezing. "What? Aegis? That private equity firm in Delaware? Why would they call in debt now? Our quarterly maturity isn't due for six months!"

"They executed a emergency acceleration clause!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "They cited material breach of corporate governance and reputational damage following news leaks about you abandoning a child at an accident scene! The press has footage, Ivan! But that's not the worst part!"

"What could be worse than that?!" Ivan roared, glaring at my back as I walked calmly toward the glass exit doors where Marcus was waiting in a black sedan.

"Aegis Holdings just executed their conversion rights!" Arthur shouted. "They converted their sixty percent debt share into primary voting stock! They just seized fifty-one percent controlling interest in Vance Dynamics! You've been ousted as CEO, Ivan! They locked your office door ten minutes ago!"

Ivan’s hand began to shake. The phone almost slipped from his grip. "Who... who owns Aegis? Who signed the order?!"

"The managing principal is sitting in your office right now with federal marshals!" Arthur gasped. "Her name is Evelyn Vance!"

Ivan dropped his arm, his eyes wide with utter shock, staring at me through the glass doors.

I turned around on the pavement, looking back at him through the clear glass. I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply raised my hand, gave him a polite, icy nod, and stepped into the back seat of Marcus's car.

"Where to, Evelyn?" Marcus asked, adjusting his rear-view mirror as he pulled out of the hospital driveway.

"The office," I said, pulling out a tablet to review the press releases. "Let's make sure Ivan finds his belongings in cardboard boxes on the curb by noon."

Thirty minutes later, I walked into the headquarters of Vance Dynamics. The sleek glass skyscraper in downtown Atlanta had Ivan's name etched into the marble lobby wall, but today, the atmosphere was chaotic. Employees were whispering in small clusters, security guards were standing at every elevator bay, and senior vice presidents were pacing frantically with papers in their hands.

When I stepped out of the executive elevator onto the top floor, the board members were already gathered in the main glass conference room.

Arthur, a man who had treated me like an invisible housewife for seven years, rushed forward, his face pale and sweating. "Evelyn! Thank God you're here! Ivan has lost his mind—he's not answering his emergency lines! We have a corporate raid happening right now from a firm called Aegis—"

"I know, Arthur," I said, setting my leather briefcase on the head of the conference table. "I am Aegis Holdings."

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

The seven board members stared at me in complete disbelief. Arthur’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

"You... you?" Arthur stammered. "You're a homemaker!"

"I was a homemaker while my husband was using corporate funds to finance his mistress's luxury lifestyle," I said calmly, opening my tablet and projecting the legal documents onto the massive wall screen behind me. "For six years, I have personally underwritten eighty percent of Vance Dynamics' research and development loans through Aegis. As of 8:01 AM today, due to default on ethical covenant clauses and financial insolvency, I hold fifty-one percent of all voting shares."

I looked around the table at the men who had laughed at my husband's dismissive jokes about me during annual dinners.

"Effective immediately, Ivan Vance is terminated from his position as Chief Executive Officer for gross negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and misappropriation of company assets," I announced, my voice booming clearly across the silent room. "I am assuming the role of Interim Executive Chairwoman."

Before anyone could speak, the glass doors burst open.

Ivan stormed into the room, his tie loose, his shirt wrinkled, and his hair disheveled. Two security guards were trying to hold him back, but he shoved them aside, his eyes bloodshot with rage.

"Evelyn!" he roared, pointing a trembling finger at me. "What is the meaning of this insanity?! Are you insane?! You can't take my company! I built this!"

"You built it on my money, Ivan," I replied, standing up and leaning over the table. "Every expansion loan you took out over the last six years was funded by Aegis. Did you really think an anonymous offshore entity was just an angel investor who loved your vision? You never even bothered to read the signatory pages."

"You tricked me!" Ivan screamed, taking a step toward me, but Marcus stepped firmly between us, holding up a restraining order.

"Touch her, Mr. Vance, and you'll spend the night in county jail," Marcus said coldly. "You have five minutes to collect your personal effects from the assistant's desk. Security will escort you off the premises."

Ivan looked around the table at his board of directors, waiting for someone to speak up for him, to defend him, to fight for him.

Every single board member looked down at their papers or stared at the floor, completely ignoring him. They knew where the power lay now.

"Arthur..." Ivan whispered, his voice cracking. "Tell them this is illegal..."

"It's entirely legal, Ivan," Arthur muttered without looking up. "She holds the debt. She holds the voting stock. You're done."

May you like

Ivan looked at me, a mixture of terror, confusion, and deep rage swirling in his eyes. "Evelyn... please. We're family. We can talk about this. Think about Sawyer..."

"I am thinking about Sawyer," I said, looking him straight in the eyes. "And that's why you're leaving."
