Part 4

Michael stared at the hidden page.

His fingers went numb.

One sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

“Run from your mother. She knows the truth about Harper.”

His daughter’s name.

Not Alina.

Not the money.

Harper.

The baby they had almost lost.

Michael looked at the sleeping woman beside him.

His wife.

His entire world.

Then he looked at Alina’s stomach.

A tiny movement.

A reminder that Harper was still fighting.

“What truth?” he whispered.

The next morning, Detective Reynolds returned.

Michael immediately handed him the hidden page.

The detective read it carefully.

Then his expression changed.

“This was hidden?”

“Yes.”

“Your father wrote this?”

Michael nodded.

“Which means he knew Patricia was dangerous.”

The detective looked at him.

“But he also knew something about the baby.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Find out.”

Two hours later, the police discovered something buried in Patricia’s financial records.

A private medical file.

Not belonging to Alina.

Belonging to Patricia.

Michael stared at the document.

“Why would my mother have a file about Harper?”

The detective opened it.

Then went quiet.

Too quiet.

“What?”

Detective Reynolds looked up slowly.

“Mr. Turner…”

“What?”

He turned the paper around.

Michael read the first line.

And his heart stopped.

“Prenatal DNA analysis request.”

He looked confused.

“What is this?”

The detective continued reading.

“This was submitted six months ago.”

“Before Harper was born?”

“Yes.”

Michael shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Then he saw the name attached.

Not Patricia.

Not Alina.

A third name.

A doctor.

A doctor he recognized.

The same doctor who had treated Alina the night she collapsed.

Michael’s face turned pale.

“No.”

“What?”

“That doctor.”

The detective looked at him.

“What about him?”

“He was the one who declared Alina and Harper dead.”

Silence.

The police immediately contacted the hospital.

But the doctor was gone.

His office was empty.

His apartment was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

The man who had signed the death certificate…

had disappeared.

Michael felt sick.

Because suddenly he understood.

The cremation wasn’t a mistake.

It wasn’t a tragedy.

It was planned.

Someone wanted Alina and Harper gone before anyone questioned anything.

And someone inside the hospital helped.

That afternoon, Alina woke up again.

Michael sat beside her.

This time, he didn’t know how to speak.

She looked at him.

“What happened?”

He tried to smile.

But she knew him too well.

“Michael.”

He looked down.

“There’s something else.”

Her face tightened.

“About your mother?”

He nodded.

“And about Harper.”

Alina immediately put a hand over her stomach.

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

He grabbed her hand.

“She’s okay.”

A tear escaped her eye.

“Then what?”

Michael took a breath.

“Your pregnancy records were accessed.”

Her expression changed.

“By who?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Then he told her everything.

The DNA request.

The missing doctor.

The hidden letter.

When he finished, Alina was silent.

Too silent.

“Alina?”

She looked at him.

And whispered:

“I remember something.”

Michael leaned closer.

“What?”

“The night before I collapsed.”

His stomach tightened.

“What about it?”

“Your mother wasn’t alone.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

“She came into the kitchen.”

Alina’s voice shook.

“And someone was waiting outside.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t see his face.”

She closed her eyes.

“But I remember hearing his voice.”

Michael held his breath.

“What did he say?”

Alina whispered:

“He said…”

She stopped.

“Alina.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He said, ‘After tonight, the Turner family line will finally belong to us.’”

Michael felt ice move through his veins.

The Turner family line.

Not money.

Not property.

Something else.

That night, Michael returned home.

For the first time since the nightmare began, he entered the house alone.

The place felt different.

Like it had been hiding from him.

He walked into the kitchen.

The same kitchen where Alina drank the tea.

The same counter where his mother placed the jar.

He opened every cabinet.

Every drawer.

Then he noticed something.

A loose floor panel.

He pulled it open.

Inside was a small box.

Old.

Dusty.

He opened it.

And froze.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Women.

Pregnant women.

All connected to the Turner family.

Michael’s hands shook.

Then he found the newest photo.

Alina.

Taken weeks before she collapsed.

And beside it…

A picture of Harper’s ultrasound.

With a note written underneath.

“The final child.”

Michael felt sick.

Final child?

Why?

Then he found another document.

A family tree.

But not the one he knew.

Names crossed out.

Dates.

Secret relationships.

And at the bottom…

Harper’s name.

Next to another name.

A name that made Michael drop the paper.

Ethan Turner.

His father.

Dead for years.

But listed as Harper’s biological grandfather.

That made sense.

Until he saw the next line.

A note.

A handwritten warning.

“Harper cannot inherit unless Michael knows the truth.”

Michael stepped back.

Because someone had been planning Harper’s future before she was even born.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Michael froze.

Then he heard it.

A sound.

A slow footsteps upstairs.

Someone was inside.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

He grabbed his phone and called the police.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice he knew.

A voice he thought he would never hear again.

“Michael.”

His blood turned cold.

Because it wasn’t Patricia.

It wasn’t the missing doctor.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from his past.

Someone who should have been dead.

He turned slowly.

And standing in the doorway…

was his father.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a file.

Michael couldn’t speak.

His father looked at him with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Michael stepped back.

“You’re alive?”

His father nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where have you been?”

His father looked toward the photo of Alina and Harper.

“I was hiding.”

“From who?”

His father’s face changed.

“From your mother.”

Michael’s hands clenched.

“You knew?”

His father looked down.

“I knew she would come for Alina.”

A pause.

“But I didn’t know she would go this far.”

Michael’s voice broke.

“Then tell me the truth.”

His father looked at him.

And whispered:

“The baby Patricia tried to kill…”

“She wasn’t trying to erase the Turner bloodline.”

Michael frowned.

“What are you saying?”

His father opened the file.

Inside was a DNA report.

A report dated three years ago.

Before Michael and Alina even married.

His father said:

“Michael…”

“The truth is…”

“Harper isn’t the only child Patricia was afraid of.”

Michael stared at the report.

And the final line destroyed him.

“Biological father: Michael Turner.”

Then below it—

“Biological mother: Alina Harris.”

Nothing unusual.

Nothing wrong.

Until he saw the attached note.

“Reason for investigation: Patricia Turner believes the child carries a secret inheritance.”

Michael looked up.

“What inheritance?”

His father’s face filled with regret.

“The one your mother killed people to get.”

And before Michael could ask another question…

a gunshot shattered the silence.

The window behind him exploded.

His father fell.

And Michael realized—

May you like

The person who wanted the truth buried…

was still there.
