Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The sound of a heavy wooden door sliding open broke the silence. The interior door that connected the kitchen to the garage creaked on its hinges, and a tall, elegant figure stepped out onto the elevated wooden landing.
It was Beatrice Sterling.
She was dressed in a tailored wool cardigan and black trousers, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, a pair of expensive reading glasses dangling from a gold chain around her neck. She held a small porcelain saucer with a teacup in her right hand, the steam rising softly into the cold garage air. She looked down at Mark, her expression shifting from mild aristocratic irritation to a cold, calculating mask of absolute control the moment she saw Maya wrapped in his jacket.
"Mark," Beatrice said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of panic. She took a slow, delicate sip of her tea before continuing. "I believe your text message clearly stated you were to arrive tomorrow morning. You are technically trespassing on my daughter’s property under the terms of the restraining order your legal counsel signed."
Mark didn't move. He stood in the center of the garage, holding his shivering daughter, his eyes locked onto the elderly woman with a lethal intensity that would have made any ordinary person step back.
"You put her in the freezer, Beatrice," Mark said, his voice dangerously quiet, a low, guttural rumble that didn't shake. "You locked a six-year-old child inside a sub-zero commercial freezer because she spilled juice on a rug."
Beatrice set her teacup down on the wooden railing of the landing with a soft, deliberate clink. She adjusted her glasses, looking down at him with the cold, superior pity she usually reserved for sub-contractors who underbid a project.
"Don't be dramatic, Mark. It’s entirely why Elena divorced you; you lack the emotional discipline required for high-society parenting," Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a clinical, instructional tone. "The child has an inherent deficit in behavioral control—a deficit she clearly inherited from your side of the family. A few minutes of sensory deprivation and cold therapy is an old, highly effective method of behavioral modification used by European boarding schools for generations. She was never in any actual danger. I have been monitoring the time from the kitchen."
"She is blue, Beatrice," Mark hissed, taking a heavy step toward the stairs, his boots crunching against the concrete. "Her hair is covered in frost. Another ten minutes and her organs would have begun to fail."

Beatrice’s eyes flicked past his shoulder for a microsecond, her gaze landing on the unplugged vertical freezer hidden behind the stack of tires in the corner. For a fraction of a second—a mere blink of an eye—the ancient woman's composure faltered, her fingers twitching against the gold chain of her glasses.
"I think it’s time you leave, Mark," she said, her voice losing its conversational smoothness, replaced by a sharp, administrative authority. "Leave the child here. She belongs to Elena. If you take her out of this garage, I will personal call Chief Fletcher at the precinct and have you arrested for felony kidnapping before you reach the highway. You know exactly what my family can do to your reputation in this town."
