Part 3: The Wedding Gift Nobody Expected

The wedding was held at a luxury estate overlooking the coast.

White roses lined the aisle.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled above hundreds of guests.

Everything about the venue screamed success.

Everything Adrian cared about was on display.

Status.

Money.

Attention.

Appearances.

And today, he intended to show everyone that he had traded his "failed" wife for a younger, pregnant woman.

At least, that was the story he wanted people to believe.

I arrived twenty minutes before the ceremony.

A black dress.

Simple heels.

No dramatic makeup.

No tears.

No bitterness.

Just calm.

The kind of calm people mistake for weakness.

Beside me stood my attorney, Rebecca Sloan.

And in my arms—

wrapped in a pale pink blanket—

was my daughter.

My beautiful daughter.

The child Adrian didn't know existed.

The child he had mocked me for being unable to have.

The child who changed everything.

Rebecca glanced at me.

"Still sure?"

I looked toward the ballroom.

"More than ever."

Inside, guests filled the rows.

Music floated through the room.

Champagne sparkled.

Laughter echoed.

At the altar stood Adrian.

Perfect tuxedo.

Perfect smile.

Perfect illusion.

Beside him stood Celeste.

One hand resting dramatically on her pregnant stomach.

The audience adored her.

Exactly as she intended.

Then Adrian saw me.

His smile widened.

For a moment.

Then his eyes dropped.

To the bundle in my arms.

The smile disappeared.

Completely.

His face turned white.

I almost laughed.

The ceremony began.

I sat quietly in the third row.

Holding my daughter.

Watching Adrian struggle to focus.

His gaze kept returning to the baby.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Because somewhere deep down—

he already knew.

When the officiant asked if anyone had reason these two should not be joined in marriage—

nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian visibly relaxed.

Then Rebecca stood.

"Actually," she said.

The room froze.

A hundred heads turned.

The officiant blinked.

"Ma'am?"

Rebecca smiled politely.

"My client has several legal matters that directly affect this union."

Adrian's face drained of color.

"Mia..."

I stood.

Still holding the baby.

Still calm.

Still smiling.

"Mia, sit down," Adrian snapped.

"No."

The single word echoed through the ballroom.

Guests exchanged nervous looks.

Celeste grabbed Adrian's arm.

"What is happening?"

I looked directly at her.

"You'll want to hear this."

Rebecca opened a folder.

"The first issue concerns inheritance theft."

Silence.

The words landed like a grenade.

Adrian took a step forward.

"That's ridiculous."

Rebecca continued.

"Three years ago, Mia inherited assets from her late grandfather."

Several guests nodded.

Many knew about the inheritance.

Few knew what happened afterward.

Rebecca held up documents.

"We have bank records showing over six hundred thousand dollars was transferred without authorization into shell accounts connected to Adrian Vale."

Gasps erupted.

Adrian looked furious.

"Those were investments."

"No," Rebecca said.

"They were theft."

Celeste suddenly looked confused.

"What?"

I turned toward her.

"You didn't know?"

Her face paled.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Rebecca slid another document onto a projector screen.

Large enough for everyone to see.

Dates.

Transfers.

Signatures.

Company accounts.

Personal accounts.

Every dollar traced.

Every lie documented.

The ballroom became silent.

Dead silent.

Adrian's mother stood abruptly.

"This is a wedding!"

"No," I replied.

"It's an audit."

Several guests actually laughed.

Adrian didn't.

Then Rebecca opened the second folder.

The one Adrian never saw coming.

"The next matter concerns paternity."

Adrian froze.

Completely froze.

His eyes moved slowly toward the baby.

Toward the little girl sleeping peacefully in my arms.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

"Mia..." he whispered.

For the first time all day—

he sounded afraid.

I lifted my daughter gently.

The pink blanket slipped back.

Tiny fingers.

Tiny nose.

Dark hair.

His eyes.

Exactly his eyes.

The entire room saw it instantly.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Celeste demanded.

Rebecca placed another document on the screen.

A certified DNA report.

99.99%.

No ambiguity.

No debate.

No escape.

The guests erupted.

People stood.

Whispers exploded.

Phones appeared everywhere.

Someone gasped.

Someone cursed.

Someone began recording.

Adrian looked like he couldn't breathe.

"You were pregnant?"

I laughed softly.

The same way he laughed at me in the hospital.

"You called me barren."

His face twisted.

I continued.

"You mocked me."

Silence.

"You left me."

More silence.

"You replaced me before our marriage was even over."

His shoulders sagged.

"And while I was carrying your child..."

My voice sharpened.

"...you were planning a wedding."

Celeste staggered backward.

"What do you mean carrying his child?"

I looked directly at her.

"I mean your fiancé abandoned his pregnant wife."

The room exploded again.

Celeste stared at Adrian.

"Tell me she's lying."

Adrian said nothing.

Not a word.

Because he couldn't.

The documents spoke louder than he ever could.

The DNA report.

The financial records.

The emails.

Everything.

Then came the final blow.

Rebecca opened the last folder.

"The company investigation."

Adrian closed his eyes.

He already knew.

"We have evidence that company funds were used to conceal the inheritance transfers."

Rebecca's voice remained calm.

Professional.

Deadly.

"Multiple transactions were approved by both Adrian Vale and Celeste Monroe."

Celeste's knees nearly gave out.

"What?"

Rebecca nodded.

"You signed several of them."

Celeste's face went white.

"No. Adrian told me those were bonuses."

Adrian didn't look at her.

He couldn't.

For the first time, Celeste realized she wasn't the winner.

She was evidence.

Guests began leaving their seats.

Board members exchanged looks.

Investors whispered.

Business partners walked toward the exits.

Nobody wanted to be standing next to Adrian anymore.

Not today.

Not after this.

Adrian looked at me desperately.

"Mia, please."

The same man who once laughed at my pain.

The same man who invited me here to humiliate me.

Now begging.

Publicly.

In front of everyone.

I adjusted my daughter in my arms.

She stirred slightly.

Then settled again.

Safe.

Protected.

Loved.

Everything Adrian had failed to be.

"You invited me here," I said quietly.

His eyes filled with panic.

"Mia—"

"You wanted me to watch you start a family."

Tears filled Celeste's eyes.

The guests listened.

Every single one.

I looked down at my daughter.

Then back at Adrian.

"You already had one."

May you like

And for the first time all day—

Adrian Vale looked completely alone.
