Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The following morning, Michael walked into the living room of his mother’s home. The family was gathered, sipping coffee, the atmosphere one of smug accomplishment. Daniel looked haunted, his eyes sunken, his hands shaking as he held a cup. Sophia was on the couch, laughing at a comment Margaret made about "the trash finally being taken out."

Michael didn't greet them. He didn't sit. He simply walked to the center of the room and tossed a heavy, clear binder onto the coffee table.

"Read," he commanded.

Daniel reached for it, his hands trembling. He opened the first page. It was the paternity test—the real one, signed, stamped, and verified. Then came the technical analysis of the photos, proving they were doctored, and the digital forensic report tracing the letter and the funds back to Sophia’s account.

"What is this?" Margaret gasped, leaning in.

"That," Michael said, his voice vibrating with controlled rage, "is the reason Emily is currently in the hospital, fighting to keep your grandson alive. And that," he pointed to the last page, "is the confirmation that Sophia has been playing all of you for fools."

The silence in the room was absolute, a void where only the sound of breathing existed. Sophia’s face drained of all color. She stood up, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "It’s a lie! Michael is lying! He’s always hated me!"

Daniel didn't speak. He stared at the pages, the ink blurring before his eyes. He read the paternity result over and over again. Daniel James Carter: Biological Father. He looked at his own hands—the hands that had shoved his wife into the rain, the hands that had discarded his son. The weight of his actions crashed down on him, a physical blow that left him gasping for air.

He looked at Sophia, his sister, the woman who had whispered into his ear and turned his heart into stone. He saw her now not as a sister, but as a parasite. He realized that the happiness he thought he had protected was the very thing he had destroyed.

"Get out," Daniel whispered.

"Daniel, listen—"

"GET OUT!" he screamed, the sound tearing through the house. He grabbed the side table and flipped it, sending the porcelain lamps and magazines crashing to the floor. "You destroyed my life! You destroyed my son! Get out of this house before I forget that we share the same blood!"

Margaret slumped into her chair, her hands over her face, realizing too late that her own greed had been the soil in which Sophia’s malice had grown. Daniel didn't look at them. He stood in the wreckage of the living room, a man who had everything and now possessed absolutely nothing but the crushing, suffocating truth.
