Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

Inside the room, Claire recognized his voice instantly. She dropped the heavy fire extinguisher, scrambled to the control panel, and pulled the emergency manual lever.

The heavy steel door slid open with a hiss.

Claire stepped out, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the blood-soaked hallway, the dead men on the floor, and Vincent sitting in his chair, his shirt drenched in red.

"Mr. Calder!" Claire cried out, rushing forward and kneeling beside his wheel. "You're hurt! You're bleeding!"

"It's just a scratch," Vincent said, his voice softer than it had been all night.

Lucy peeked out from behind her mother's skirt. She looked at the blood, at the shattered walls, and then up at Vincent's face. She didn't cry. Instead, she reached into her sweater pocket, pulled out a small, crumpled band-aid with cartoon bears printed on it, and held it up to him.

"For your owee," Lucy whispered.

Vincent looked down at the tiny band-aid, then at the little girl who possessed more courage than the hardened criminals he had dealt with his entire life.

A genuine, soft smile broke across Vincent's scarred face. He took the band-aid gently. "Thank you, Lucy. This will fix it right up."

He looked up at Claire. "Take Lucy into the private study at the end of the hall. Lock the door from the inside. Sal Moretti is coming up, and this ends tonight."

"Vincent, no," Claire begged, using his first name for the very first time. She grabbed his calloused hand, tears brimming in her eyes. "Come with us! The back stairwell is clear! We can leave together!"

Vincent looked down at her hand holding his. The warmth of her skin made his chest ache with a fierce, protective instinct he hadn't felt in decades.

"If I leave, Claire, men like Moretti will chase us forever," Vincent said gently, reaching up to softly brush a stray tear from her cheek. "I am done running. I am done hiding in this chair. I am going to end this so you and your daughter never have to live in fear again."

Claire stared into his dark, unwavering eyes. She realized then that this man was not a monster. He was a guardian. A dark, terrifying guardian who was willing to burn down his own kingdom to keep them safe.

"Come back to us," Claire whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

"I will," Vincent promised.

Claire took Lucy’s hand and ran down the corridor into the private study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind them.

Vincent wheeled his chair into the center of the grand third-floor landing, directly atop the sweeping double staircase that led to the foyer below.

Ten minutes later, the sound of heavy boots echoed up the stairs.

Sal Moretti stepped onto the landing. He was a broad, ugly man with a shaved head, wearing an expensive leather coat over a blood-stained shirt. He held a high-powered shotgun in his hands, flanked by his four remaining top enforcers.

Sal stopped when he saw Vincent sitting alone at the top of the stairs, bathed in the dim light of the chandelier.

"Look at you," Sal spat, raising his shotgun. "The great Vincent Calder, waiting like a sitting duck in a wheelbarrow."

"You came into my home, Sal," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he held his silver revolver in his lap. "You brought violence to a place where a child sleeps."

Sal laughed, a crude, ugly sound. "I don't give a damn about children, Vincent! I care about power! And tonight, everything you built becomes mine!"

"Power isn't built on guns and noise, Sal," Vincent said softly. "It's built on loyalty."

From the shadows behind Sal, three men stepped out quietly.

It was Marcus, covered in dust and soot, flanked by two of Vincent’s surviving security guards. They held automatic weapons trained directly on the back of Sal’s head.

Sal’s smile died instantly. He froze, feeling the cold steel of Marcus’s rifle pressing against the back of his neck.

"It’s over, Moretti," Marcus growled. "Drop the gun."

Sal looked at Vincent, his face twisting in sudden, desperate realization. "You... you trapped me."

"I told you, Sal," Vincent said, raising his revolver one last time. "Nervous men make mistakes."

Sal panicked, trying to spin around and fire his shotgun at Marcus, but Marcus was faster. A hail of gunfire erupted across the landing. Sal Moretti fell backward down the sweeping marble staircase, his weapon clattering uselessly against the steps, his body coming to a rest at the bottom of the foyer.

His surviving enforcers dropped their weapons, raising their hands in absolute surrender.

The siege of the Calder estate was over.
