Chapter 3 - The Broken Candy Box

Out on the street, the light bar on Police Unit 402 flashed red and blue against the concrete wall of the emergency bay.

Inside the rear compartment of the vehicle, Lupita sat on the hard vinyl bench. The handcuffs pulled down on her small wrists. Her feet, scraped and bleeding from her run across the city, didn't touch the floorboard. Across her lap lay her yellow ribbon, its cardboard candy box crushed and flattened during her struggle with the hospital security guards. A dozen mints were scattered across the floor, their wrappers dirty.

Lupita leaned her forehead against the cool, tinted glass of the car window, watching the hospital entrance. Her eyes were swollen, but she wasn't crying anymore. She was just tired. Her shoulder hurt where the shirt had torn, and her feet throbbed with a dull, burning pain.

Suddenly, the rear door of the police cruiser was yanked open with tremendous force.

Alejandro Santillán stood in the open doorway, panting heavy breaths, his tailored white shirt damp with sweat. Behind him stood the chief of police, three officers, and the hospital director, all hovering nervously.

Lupita flinched, shrinking back into the corner of the vinyl seat, raising her handcuffed hands to protect her face. "I'm sorry..." she whimpered. "I didn't mean to steal him... I'm sorry..."

Alejandro froze. Seeing this tiny, injured child cowering from him broke something deep inside his chest.

Without a word, the billionaire dropped to his knees on the dirty asphalt of the parking bay. He reached into the back of the car, his large hands carefully hovering over her wrists.

"Keys," Alejandro demanded without looking back. "Now."

The police captain hurriedly stepped forward, pulling a brass key from his belt, his hands shaking as he unlocked the cuffs. The heavy metal fell away with a sharp click.

Alejandro gently reached out and took Lupita’s small, bruised wrists into his own hands. He looked down at her feet—caked in street blackness, with raw skin on her heels and small cuts bleeding onto the vinyl.

"Forgive me," Alejandro said, his voice breaking as he looked into her wide brown eyes. "Forgive me, little one. I was wrong. I was so terribly wrong."

Lupita looked at him in confusion. "Is... is Mateo okay? Did the medicine work?"

Tears welled in Alejandro’s eyes. A man who controlled vast corporate empires and commanded thousands of employees was kneeling in the dirt before an eight-year-old street child, unable to contain his emotion.

"He is alive because of you," Alejandro whispered, gently lifting her small hand and pressing it against his cheek. "You saved my son's life."

He reached into the vehicle, slid one arm behind her back and the other beneath her knees, and lifted her out of the police cruiser. He pulled her against his chest, completely unconcerned about the dirt, oil, and blood smearing onto his custom white shirt.

"Sir, we need to file a report—" the police captain began.

"If any of you come near this child again," Alejandro cut him off, his voice quiet and deadly, "I will ensure you spend the rest of your careers working security at a landfill. Get out of my sight."

Alejandro carried Lupita back through the main sliding doors of St. Jude’s Hospital.

As he walked into the lobby, the staff and visitors who had previously judged the girl now stood in respectful silence. Renata was seated in the corner, flanked by two security officers, sobbing as she watched the billionaire carry the barefoot girl past her without a glance.

"Dr. Morales!" Alejandro called out as he entered the surgical corridor.

"I’m right here, Alejandro," the doctor replied, stepping out of a treatment room.

"I want the chief of pediatric medicine, the best trauma team, and a specialist in pediatric podiatry in room one immediately," Alejandro ordered. "Clean her wounds, treat her injuries, and prepare a private suite for her on the top floor."

"Right away," Dr. Morales said, waving two head nurses forward.

"No, wait," Lupita whimpered, her hands tightening around Alejandro’s collar as the nurses approached with a wheelchair. "My box... my mints... I have to sell them. My grandmother... she needs the money for her medicine today..."

Alejandro looked down at the crushed cardboard box held in her small hand.

"Don't worry about your mints, Lupita," Alejandro said softly, setting her down gently onto the clean cotton sheets of the medical wheelchair. "Don't worry about anything ever again. Where is your grandmother?"

"She’s at our stall near the market," Lupita murmured, her eyelids growing heavy as the warmth of the hospital and the release of adrenaline took their toll. "In the alleys behind Plaza Garibaldi... she’s waiting for me..."

Alejandro turned to Marcos, who was standing behind him.

"Take three cars," Alejandro instructed his intelligence chief. "Find her grandmother immediately. Bring her here in my private limousine. Have a medical team accompany you in case she requires care."

"Understood, sir," Marcos nodded, turning to execute the command.

Alejandro walked alongside the wheelchair as the nurses wheeled Lupita down the sterile hallway toward the private elevator. The little girl looked up at the smooth white walls and the soft, warm lights overhead.

"Is Mateo really okay?" she asked again, her voice fading into a tired whisper.

"He is resting," Alejandro smiled softly, leaning down to smooth a strand of messy hair away from her forehead. "And as soon as he wakes up, he’s going to meet the bravest girl in the world."
