PART 3

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Nathan stood in the darkness, every instinct telling him something was wrong.

Beside him, Emily was frozen.

Not scared like someone facing a stranger.

Scared like someone facing a nightmare that had finally returned.

“The man who killed my sister.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Nathan turned toward her.

“Emily, who is he?”

But before she could answer, a shadow moved at the end of the hallway.

A figure stepped forward.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like he had walked through those doors many times before.

The lights suddenly flickered back on.

And Nathan saw him.

A man in his fifties.

Expensive suit.

Silver hair.

A calm smile.

“Hello, Emily.”

Emily’s face went pale.

“Marcus.”

Nathan immediately stepped between them.

“Who are you?”

The man looked amused.

“I’m the person who has been waiting seven years for her to make a mistake.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“You broke into my home.”

Marcus smiled.

“Careful, Mr. Carter. You don’t know what you’re protecting.”

Emily’s hands began shaking.

Nathan noticed.

He reached behind him and took her hand.

A small gesture.

But it reminded her.

She wasn’t alone anymore.

“Leave,” Nathan said.

Marcus laughed softly.

“You really think money makes you powerful?”

Nathan’s expression didn’t change.

“No.”

He looked at Emily.

“Truth does.”

For the first time, Marcus’s smile disappeared.

The children appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Mom?”

Emily turned quickly.

“Noah, take your brother and sister back to your room.”

The children didn’t move.

They looked frightened.

Nathan walked toward them.

“Listen to me.”

His voice softened.

“Your mom is safe.”

The children trusted him.

Slowly, they disappeared upstairs.

Marcus watched.

“You actually care about them.”

Nathan turned.

“They are my family.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You have no idea what you married into.”

Emily stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Her voice trembled.

But she stood.

“You destroyed enough.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You still think you’re brave.”

Emily swallowed.

“I’m not the same woman you scared years ago.”

Marcus smiled coldly.

“You’re exactly the same.”

That sentence hurt.

Nathan saw it.

And it made him angry.

“Tell me what happened,” Nathan demanded.

Marcus looked at him.

“You really don’t know?”

“No.”

A pause.

Then Marcus laughed.

“Interesting.”

He looked at Emily.

“She never told you.”

Nathan turned to Emily.

She looked away.

“Emily?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was going to.”

“When?”

She had no answer.

Marcus walked toward the table.

“You should know who your wife really is.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Enough.”

But Marcus continued.

“Rachel wasn’t just investigating fraud.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Stop.”

“She was planning to expose everyone.”

Nathan looked at Emily.

“Everyone?”

Marcus smiled.

“Your wife’s sister found out powerful people were involved.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“People connected to your world.”

The room went cold.

Nathan understood.

This wasn’t just about Emily.

This was bigger.

“Who hired you?”

Marcus laughed.

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“What’s the right one?”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Who benefits when the truth disappears?”

Suddenly, police sirens echoed outside.

Marcus’s expression changed.

Nathan had already called security.

And emergency services.

The front doors opened.

Detectives entered.

“Don’t move!”

Marcus raised his hands.

But he wasn’t afraid.

He was smiling.

Because he knew something.

Something Nathan didn’t.

As Marcus was taken away, one detective approached Nathan.

“Mr. Carter.”

“Yes?”

“We searched his vehicle.”

“And?”

The detective handed him a folder.

“He wasn’t alone.”

Nathan opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Surveillance images.

Of Emily.

The children.

The mansion.

And one photo taken just days earlier.

Emily walking with the children.

Someone had been watching them.

For months.

Nathan looked at Emily.

Her face collapsed.

“I knew it.”

“What?”

“I knew they wouldn’t stop.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Who are they?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“But you have a guess.”

She looked at him.

And he saw the fear return.

“There is one person.”

The next morning, Nathan made a call.

A call he never thought he would make.

His private investigator.

“Find everything about Rachel Morgan.”

The investigator hesitated.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even things that involve your family?”

Nathan became silent.

Then answered.

“Especially those.”

Meanwhile, Emily sat in the children’s room.

Noah was holding her hand.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to lose our home?”

Her heart broke.

“No.”

“Are we going to lose you?”

That question destroyed her.

She pulled him close.

“Never.”

But inside, she wondered.

Because for seven years she had protected them by hiding.

Now hiding was impossible.

Later that day, Nathan returned.

He looked different.

Serious.

Angry.

Emily knew immediately.

“You found something.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Yes.”

She opened it.

The first page was Rachel’s name.

The second page was a photograph.

A photograph of Rachel meeting someone.

Someone familiar.

Emily stared.

Her breathing stopped.

“No.”

Nathan watched her.

“Who is that?”

Emily whispered:

“Your father.”

Nathan froze.

“My father?”

Emily nodded.

“Rachel was investigating him.”

Silence.

Nathan took the photo.

His father.

The man who taught him business.

The man who built the Carter empire.

The man everyone respected.

“Why?”

Emily’s voice cracked.

“Because she discovered he was involved.”

Nathan shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it was.”

The next document made his blood run cold.

A bank transfer.

A payment.

From Carter Holdings.

To Marcus.

The exact amount.

The same month Rachel died.

Nathan stepped back.

His entire world shifted.

His family.

His company.

His father.

Everything he trusted.

A lie.

That night, Nathan confronted his mother.

Victoria was in the mansion library.

She looked up.

“You look upset.”

Nathan placed the documents on the table.

“What did Dad do?”

Victoria’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Nathan saw.

“You know.”

A long silence.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Your father made mistakes.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?”

His voice broke.

“A woman died.”

Victoria looked away.

“He thought he was protecting the family.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Protecting us?”

His eyes filled with anger.

“He destroyed people.”

Victoria began crying.

And for the first time, Nathan saw his mother not as a powerful woman.

But as someone who had spent years carrying a terrible secret.

“I tried to stop him.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“You helped him.”

That night, Nathan made another decision.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a CEO.

As a husband.

And a father.

He would expose the truth.

Even if it destroyed the Carter name.

But before he could act…

Emily received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

WE KNOW ABOUT THE CHILDREN.

Her hands began shaking.

Nathan saw it.

“What happened?”

She showed him.

His face turned dark.

Then another message arrived.

IF YOU WANT THEM SAFE, COME ALONE.

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

Nathan took the phone.

“You’re not going anywhere alone.”

But Emily shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“They will hurt them.”

Nathan held her face gently.

“They already tried.”

A pause.

“And they failed.”

For years, Emily had fought alone.

Now she had someone beside her.

But neither of them knew the next truth.

The person threatening them wasn’t trying to scare Emily.

They were trying to lure Nathan away.

Because the real target…

May you like

was not the woman he married.

It was the empire he inherited.
