Chapter 8 - The Siege

The transition was bloody, but decisive.

Within a week, three of the older capos fled the state. Two accepted the new corporate structure, trading their illicit rackets for high-paying positions in Gabriel’s legal construction firms.

Carlo Vitiello, however, vanished from the hospital before his leg had fully healed.

Gabriel doubled the security around the estate. Emma was confined entirely to the mansion. She hated it, pacing the grand halls like a caged lioness, her baby bump just beginning to show beneath her comfortable sweaters.

To keep her sane, Gabriel had Silas arrange for Diane to visit three times a week, bringing ledgers and inventory photos from the antique shop so Emma could manage the business from the safety of the estate's library.

One rainy afternoon in early April, Diane was sitting across from Emma in the library, sipping tea while Emma inspected high-resolution photos of a Victorian writing desk.

"You're glowing, Emma," Diane smiled, looking at her niece’s soft, flushed face. "I was so worried when you married him. I thought I had ruined your life. But you... you love him."

Emma looked down at the silver wedding band on her left hand, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips. "I do, Aunt Diane. He's difficult, and he carries so much darkness, but... he loves me. Fiercely."

Downstairs, the heavy oak doors of the mansion suddenly rattled with a concussive THUMP.

Emma jumped, spilling hot tea onto her lap. "What was that?"

Before Diane could speak, alarms blared through the house—a shrill, deafening siren that meant the outer perimeter had been breached.

Silas burst into the library, his sidearm drawn, his face pale. "Miss Emma. Move. Now. Into the panic room."

"Silas, what's happening?" Emma demanded, grabbing her aunt's arm.

"Vitiello," Silas grunted, practically shoving the two women toward the hidden doorway behind the bookshelves. "He hired an outside crew from Chicago. They hit the front gate with a breaching charge. The boss is holding the main hall. Go!"

Emma pushed Diane into the steel-reinforced panic room, but before she stepped inside, she turned back to Silas. "Gabriel is out there?"

"He's securing the entry point," Silas said, stepping into the hallway. "Lock the door, Emma. Do not open it for anyone but me or Gabriel."

The heavy steel door slid shut, locking with a series of heavy mechanical clanks, plunging Emma and Diane into the quiet, dim light of the safe room. Monitors on the wall flickered to life, showing feeds from the security cameras around the estate.

Emma watched the screens in absolute horror.

There were at least a dozen armed men in black tactical gear flooding the front courtyard. Gabriel, Silas, and four security guards were pinned down behind the massive marble pillars of the grand foyer, returning fire as the windows shattered inward in a storm of glass and lead.

"Oh my God," Diane sobbed, covering her face.

Emma couldn't look away. Her hands rested protectively over her stomach. She watched her husband, the man who had bought her debts to save her, the man who read to her in the evenings, fighting a desperate, bloody war in his own home to protect her and their unborn child.

She saw Gabriel take a glancing shot to his left shoulder. He staggered back against the wall, his dark suit jacket instantly staining wet and black with blood.

"Gabriel!" Emma screamed at the soundproof monitor, tears streaming down her face.

She watched as Gabriel gritted his teeth, switched his weapon to his right hand, and signaled to Silas. They were being overrun.

Then, suddenly, the camera feed from the back gate lit up with flashing red and blue lights.

Dozens of heavily armored police cruisers and SWAT vehicles smashed through the iron gates, swarming the estate. Federal agents and local police poured onto the grounds, engaging Vitiello's hired mercenaries from the rear.

Gabriel had called the police.

The mafia boss of Knoxville, a man whose family had spent eighty years bribing, fighting, and avoiding law enforcement, had called the federal authorities to his own home to save his wife.

The shootout ended quickly after that. Surrounded and outgunned, the Chicago mercenaries dropped their weapons and surrendered.

Emma saw Gabriel drop his gun to the marble floor, leaning heavily against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder as federal agents rushed into the foyer.

Emma slammed her hand against the release button of the panic room.
