Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Shadows

The next three weeks passed in a peaceful haze.

Under Rosa’s care, Mara began to heal. She ate warm, hearty meals, slept in the soft canopy bed, and spent her afternoons walking through the beautiful, walled gardens of the estate. The color began to return to her cheeks, and her body began to soften, the sharp, defensive edges of her posture slowly melting away.

But she rarely saw Julian.

He was a shadow in his own home, leaving before dawn and returning long after she had gone to sleep. Sometimes, she would hear the quiet rumble of his car in the driveway at three in the morning, or see the light of his study glowing through the trees as she looked out her window.

One evening, unable to sleep, Mara walked down to the kitchen to fetch a glass of warm milk.

As she passed the library, she heard voices. The door was slightly ajar, a sliver of golden light spilling across the hallway floor.

“The Moretti family is moving on the eastern docks, Julian,” a voice said—it was Marco, the scarred guard. “They know we’ve been distracted. They think Leo’s death has left us weak.”

“They are welcome to try,” Julian’s voice replied, cold and steady. “But their movements are sloppy. They are desperate.”

“There’s something else,” Marco hesitated. “They’ve been asking questions about the woman we took from the south side. Grant’s associates have been talking. They think she’s a vulnerability. A lever to use against you.”

Mara’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand instinctively pressed against her stomach.

She was the vulnerability. She had brought the danger of her past into this sanctuary, and now, Julian’s enemies were looking to use her to destroy him.

“Let them look,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver down Mara’s spine. “If a single Moretti soldier steps foot near this estate, we will not bury them. We will leave them on the docks as a warning to their boss. Mara is under my personal protection. Anyone who touches her touches me.”

The door opened fully, and Julian stepped out into the hallway.

He stopped when he saw her standing there, her glass of milk clutched in her hands, her eyes wide with fear.

“Mara,” he said, his voice immediately losing its icy edge. He walked over to her, his gray eyes scanning her face for any sign of distress. “You should be asleep.”

“I... I heard,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “They’re looking for me, Julian. I’m putting your family in danger. I should leave. I can find a place in another state—”

Julian’s hand closed around her wrist—not tight, but firm, steady, and incredibly grounding.

“You are not going anywhere,” he said, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding authority. “Do you think I brought you here because I was afraid of the Morettis? Do you think a few street thugs can take what is mine?”

He stepped closer, his chest nearly touching her shoulder. The scent of rain and expensive tobacco clung to him, a intoxicating mixture that made her head spin.

“You are a Salvatore now, Mara,” he whispered, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch. “And we do not run from our enemies. We crush them.”

He took the glass from her hands, setting it on a nearby table, and gently touched her chin, forcing her to look up into his winter-gray eyes.

“I promised you that you were safe,” he said softly. “And I do not break my promises. Trust me.”

“I do,” she whispered, realizing with a sudden, terrifying clarity that she did. She trusted this mafia boss more than she had ever trusted anyone in her entire life.
