PART 5 — The Secret Hidden in the Family

No one spoke.

The silence in Rodrigo's office felt heavier than any argument.

His mother stood near the fireplace with one hand resting lightly on her cane, but for the first time in his life, Rodrigo noticed something he had never seen before.

She was trembling.

Only slightly.

Barely enough for anyone else to notice.

But he noticed.

Because Doña Mercedes Santillán never trembled.

Not when business rivals threatened the family.

Not when her husband died.

Not even during Santiago's illness.

She had always appeared perfectly composed.

Until now.

Rodrigo looked at Arturo.

"Play that back."

Arturo nodded and enlarged the security log on the monitor.

"The surveillance system wasn't hacked."

He clicked another screen.

"It was accessed using the administrator password."

Rodrigo frowned.

"Only three people know that password."

"You."

"Myself."

"And..."

He stopped speaking.

Arturo finished the sentence.

"...Doña Mercedes."

The room became deathly still.

Mariana slowly turned toward her mother-in-law.

Mercedes forced a smile.

"Surely you aren't suggesting I deleted security footage."

Arturo answered calmly.

"I'm only telling you what the system recorded."

Mercedes laughed.

"It must be a mistake."

"The logs cannot make mistakes," Arturo replied.

"They record every login."

Rodrigo rubbed both hands across his face.

"I don't understand."

He looked at his mother.

"Why would you even enter the security system?"

Mercedes straightened her shoulders.

"I wanted to check the cameras after the installers left."

"That's all."

"When?"

"I don't remember."

Arturo checked another file.

"The login occurred at 11:42 that night."

Mercedes nodded too quickly.

"There."

"You see?"

"I told you."

Arturo continued reading.

"The session lasted thirty-six minutes."

Rodrigo frowned.

"It takes less than five minutes to check camera feeds."

No one answered.

Mariana suddenly remembered something.

"The toy chest."

Everyone looked toward her.

"It arrived the same week the cameras were installed."

Rodrigo nodded slowly.

"It did."

"I remember because the nursery was redecorated."

Mariana looked toward Mercedes.

"You supervised everything."

Mercedes folded her arms.

"I wanted my grandson's room to be beautiful."

"You also insisted the toy chest stay beside his crib."

"I thought it looked best there."

Nicolás quietly spoke from the corner.

"You became angry when we moved it."

Mercedes turned sharply toward him.

"Because it was expensive."

"No."

The boy shook his head.

"You were afraid."

For the first time since entering the mansion, Nicolás sounded completely certain.

"I know the difference."

Mercedes's face hardened.

"You know nothing."

"I'm only a street child, remember?"

The words echoed painfully through the room.

Mariana lowered her eyes.

She remembered how cruelly Mercedes had spoken to him only yesterday.

Yet this same boy had done more for Santiago than fourteen specialists combined.

Rodrigo walked toward the nursery.

Without saying a word, everyone followed.

The white toy chest still sat several feet away from the crib where security had moved it.

Elena carefully examined it again.

This time she wasn't looking for electronic devices.

She studied the wood itself.

She tapped different sections with a small rubber tool.

Most of the chest produced a solid sound.

Until she reached the back panel.

Tap.

Tap.

Thunk.

She stopped.

Rodrigo noticed immediately.

"What?"

Elena tapped again.

"The back sounds hollow."

She looked at Arturo.

"Do you have a screwdriver?"

Within moments the back panel had been removed.

Inside...

Everyone froze.

The toy chest wasn't solid wood at all.

A hidden compartment occupied nearly half its interior.

Inside the compartment lay several objects.

A power cable.

A battery pack.

Mounting brackets.

And a folded instruction sheet printed entirely in German.

Elena carefully unfolded the papers.

Her expression darkened.

"This confirms it."

"What?"

"This toy chest..."

She looked directly at Rodrigo.

"...was specially modified before it entered your home."

Mariana felt dizzy.

"So it wasn't just the device?"

"No."

"The chest itself was designed to conceal it."

Rodrigo stared silently at the hidden compartment.

Someone hadn't randomly hidden an object behind furniture.

Someone had ordered custom-made furniture...

Specifically to hide that machine beside his infant son.

Arturo immediately called the European manufacturer.

After several transfers, they reached the company director.

The conversation lasted almost twenty minutes.

When Arturo finally ended the call, he looked stunned.

"They never built this compartment."

Everyone stared.

"What do you mean?"

"The manufacturer shipped a normal toy chest."

"No hidden space."

"No modifications."

"So..."

Rodrigo slowly finished the sentence.

"...someone altered it after it arrived in Mexico."

Arturo nodded.

"Exactly."

Elena carefully examined the instruction papers again.

Tucked between two folded pages was something else.

A faded business card.

She pulled it free.

On the front appeared the logo of a custom furniture restoration workshop.

On the back...

Someone had handwritten a delivery address.

Rodrigo recognized it immediately.

His expression changed.

"I know this place."

"Where is it?" Mariana asked.

"A warehouse."

"One of my old construction storage buildings."

Arturo looked confused.

"We haven't used that warehouse in years."

Rodrigo slowly nodded.

"Exactly."

Before anyone could speak again, Rodrigo's phone rang.

It was his personal physician.

He answered immediately.

"Doctor?"

"I reviewed Santiago's overnight monitor."

Rodrigo held his breath.

"Yes?"

"There has been significant improvement."

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

"His oxygen levels have increased."

"The fever continues dropping."

"And..."

The doctor paused.

"I honestly can't explain it."

Rodrigo looked toward Nicolás.

He didn't say anything.

He simply smiled.

The smallest smile.

As though he had expected this all along.

That evening, while everyone focused on Santiago's improving condition, another drama unfolded elsewhere in the mansion.

Doña Mercedes quietly packed a small leather suitcase.

Not clothing.

Documents.

Jewelry.

Cash.

She opened her bedroom safe and removed a thick envelope.

Inside were old photographs.

Bank statements.

And several letters tied together with a faded blue ribbon.

She stared at them for a long moment.

Then whispered to herself,

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

The first anyone had ever seen.

She quickly wiped it away.

Outside her bedroom door, footsteps echoed in the hallway.

She froze.

Someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Mercedes hid the envelope beneath the mattress before opening the door.

Rodrigo stood outside.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

"Mother."

She forced a smile.

"Yes?"

"I need you to come downstairs."

"Why?"

"Because Detective Alejandro Cruz from the Mexico City Police Department has arrived."

Her heart skipped.

"The police?"

"Yes."

"What do they want?"

Rodrigo held her gaze for several long seconds.

"They're here..."

"...to ask about the man who installed Santiago's nursery."

For the first time in decades, Doña Mercedes had no answer ready.

And as she slowly followed her son down the staircase, she realized something terrifying.

The secret she had buried for six long months...

May you like

Was no longer buried at all.

It was beginning to breathe.
