Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

The conference room on the top floor of Wellman & Associates was an expanse of glass, steel, and brilliant afternoon sunlight. The view looked directly out over the glittering blue waters of San Diego Bay, the massive white sails of passing yachts providing a peaceful contrast to the financial warfare occurring inside the room.

It was Tuesday morning—forty-eight hours after I had fled the Vance estate. I was sitting at the center of the long mahogany table, wearing a crisp white linen blazer, my laptop open, surrounded by three of my father’s senior forensic financial analysts. Across from us sat two field investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS, their badges resting neatly beside their digital tablets.

My father stood at the head of the table, a laser pointer in his hand, projecting a massive, complex flowchart of corporate entities onto the white wall.

"For the last forty-eight hours, our audit team has been running a deep-dive trace on the transaction histories of Vance Logistics LLC," my father announced, clicking a button that highlighted a series of red lines connecting to an offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands. "What we uncovered isn't just a standard business failure, gentlemen. It’s an intentional, multi-tier corporate shell game designed to hide the systemic theft of investor funds."

"Look at the transport manifests from March of last year," I spoke up, tapping a key on my laptop that synchronized my display with the main projector screen. "Derek and his mother have been generating thousands of fictitious shipping routes between San Diego and Vancouver. They claimed to be transporting high-value medical components for an international pharmaceutical conglomerate."

I looked directly at the lead IRS investigator, a sharp-eyed agent named Special Agent Torres.

"But when you cross-reference these specific container serial numbers with the digital access logs of the port customs authority, those containers were entirely empty. They were ghost shipments. The Vances were using these fabricated manifests to secure short-term, high-interest commercial loans from private equity firms, using the fake shipping contracts as collateral. They used the new loan capital to pay off their older debts, operating a classic Ponzi scheme right beneath the surface of a legitimate logistics firm."

Agent Torres leaned forward, his eyes fixed on the financial spreadsheets. "And the total volume of the fraudulent loan drawdowns?"

"Thirty-two million dollars over eighteen months," I stated, my voice completely level. "And the primary authorization signatures on every single one of these ghost manifests don't just belong to Derek. They were co-signed by Brenda Vance as the managing corporate treasurer."

The double glass doors of the conference room clicked open, and Victoria Vance walked inside, carrying a fresh stack of legal documents bearing the red seal of the federal court system.

"The federal judge just signed off on the emergency asset freeze," Victoria announced, a thin, triumphant smile on her face as she laid the documents on the table. "Every corporate account, every personal line of credit, and every piece of real estate registered under the Vance name worldwide has been officially locked by the U.S. Marshals Service. They are executing the physical seizure of the mountain estate as we speak."

She looked at me, her eyes softening slightly with professional respect. "Your ex-fiancé and his mother are currently sitting in their corporate headquarters downtown, completely unaware that their keycard access codes have just been deactivated by the federal task force. They don't even have enough liquidity left to buy a cup of coffee from the lobby machine."

"The audit is complete, Agent Torres," my father said, turning off the projector, leaving the room illuminated by the bright, clean California sun. "The data is fully compiled, verified, and verified. The Vance family wanted to use my daughter as a maid to sweep their financial crimes under the rug. Instead, she just handed you the key to their prison cells."
