Chapter 2 - The Silent Search

The penthouse on the eighty-fifth floor of the Sterling Tower was devoid of warmth.
Arthur Sterling sat behind an imposing desk of dark walnut, his eyes bloodshot, his tailored suit jacket thrown haphazardly over a chair. For forty-eight hours, his world had ceased to exist. Two days ago, his three-week-old son, Julian, had been abducted from his private estate in the suburbs during a rainstorm. The security cameras had been cut, the perimeter guards incapacitated by a sophisticated military-grade jammer, and the cradle left empty.
Standing before Arthur was Vance, his chief of security, a man who had navigated war zones but now looked thoroughly shaken.
"Give me something, Vance," Arthur said, his voice raspy and dangerously low. "I don't pay you millions to tell me that a three-week-old child vanished into thin air."
"Sir, we tracked the vehicle used by the abductors to the south district," Vance reported, laying a map on the desk. "It was burned in an alley behind the old rail yard. We found traces of high-end medical equipment inside—it appears they had a incubator setup in the van. But whoever organized this was professional. They hit a snag, though."
Arthur leaned forward, his hands clenching into tight fists. "What snag?"
"The local gang that operated in that quadrant turned volatile. They tried to double-cross the abductors for a higher ransom. Shots were fired near the abandoned market. We found blood pools from two unidentified men, but no baby. Our theory... our fear... is that during the firefight, the infant was abandoned or handed off to avoid capture."
Arthur stood up so fast his heavy chair crashed backward against the floor-to-ceiling glass window. "You think my son was left on the street? In the rain?"
"We are sweeping every square inch of the south district, Mr. Sterling," Vance said quickly. "Hospitals, orphanages, police stations. If anyone brings in a baby, we will know instantly."
"He has a unique medical mark," Arthur said, his voice trembling with suppressed agony. "The birthmark on his left wrist—a dark, star-shaped cluster. And he requires specialized metabolic formula, Vance! Without proper care, he won't survive three days!"

Arthur turned to face the vast, glowing expanse of the city below. Millions of lights, thousands of streets, endless alleys. His vast fortune, capable of buying fleets of ships and towers of steel, was completely useless. Somewhere down in that cold, dark maze, his only heir was breathing—or dying—alone.
"Find him," Arthur whispered against the glass. "If you have to tear down every building in this city block by block... find my son."
