Chapter 4 - The Pocket Evidence

"Get your filthy hands off my inheritance, you low-life maid!"
Richard’s voice echoed through the private third-floor corridor of the hospital an hour later. The corporate lawyers had been dismissed to the lobby, leaving only Richard, Evelyn, and myself standing near the large plate-glass window overlooking the rainy parking lot. Evelyn was pointing her diamond-encrusted finger directly at my chest, her face contorted in a mask of absolute, aristocratic fury.
"We’ve already called the Greenwich police, Valerie," Evelyn hissed, her voice vibrating with a dangerous, unstable energy. "They are checking the security footage from the house right now. We know you were accessing the secure network terminal in the study. You’re going to jail for corporate espionage, theft, and medical malpractice. You think you’re smart because you know a few medical terms? You’re nothing but a servant."
As I stood there, watching the two of them look down at me, I realized they genuinely believed they had won. They thought that their wealth, their social standing, and their ability to command the local police department would be enough to sweep this under the rug, just like they had swept my medical career away three years ago. They thought I was a desperate girl trying to steal a piece of the Carter fortune before the old lady died.
"I don't care about your inheritance, Evelyn," I said softly, my voice calm, almost detached. "And I don't care about your house."
I reached slowly into the pocket of my blue maid's uniform, keeping my movements deliberate so Richard wouldn't think I was reaching for a weapon. I pulled out the small silver digital voice recorder and the high-capacity flash drive I had taken from the estate.
"What is that?" Richard demanded, his corporate instincts instantly flaring as he saw the electronic devices. "Is that proprietary data from the firm?"
"This is the reason I spent six months cleaning your mother's toilets, Richard," I said, holding the recorder up between us. "Three years ago, a young emergency medicine resident refused to falsify the blood-alcohol reports for your brother Julian after he killed a pedestrian on the West Side Highway. You used your firm's security division to hack her digital signature, place fentanyl in her locker, and destroy her entire life. Do you remember her name, Richard?"
Richard froze. The blood seemed to leave his face for the second time that day, his eyes locking onto my facial features with a sudden, horrific recognition that had been obscured by the maid's apron and the tied-back hair. "Valerie... Dr. Cross?"
"Yes," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "Dr. Valerie Cross. The chief resident you broke because your family was too important to face a jail cell. I came to your house to find the backup files of that digital frame-job. I knew your firm kept everything on a private local server at the Greenwich estate for tax shielding."
Evelyn let out a sharp, panicked laugh, stepping in front of her husband. "It doesn't matter who you are! It's an illegal recording! It's inadmissible in a court of law! You broke into our private network!"
"I didn't break into anything, Evelyn," I countered, turning the voice recorder over to show the green light blinking. "Your mother, Eleanor, gave me her secondary administrator access code three months ago. You see, Eleanor wasn't as blind as you thought she was. She noticed that her corporate dividends were being systematically rerouted into an offshore entity called Vanguard Management LLC—a company registered under your maiden name, Evelyn."
Evelyn backed up against the wall, her mouth opening but no sound coming out.
"And that's not the best part," I continued, my voice hardening until it cut through the quiet corridor like iron. "Yesterday afternoon, before Eleanor had her attack, she asked me to help her download the full security log from the master bedroom's hidden nanny-cam—the one you installed to spy on her nurses. I have the video right here on this drive, Evelyn. It shows you entering Eleanor’s room at 11:14 p.m. last Thursday while she was sleeping. It shows you opening her medicine cabinet, taking out her daily herbal tea tins, and mixing a white, crystalline powder into them. The lab at the hospital just identified that powder as pure digitalis."
Richard turned his head slowly to look at his wife, his expression transforming from corporate anger into a deep, primal horror. "Evelyn... what did you do?"
May you like
"She was going to change the will, Richard!" Evelyn screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she grabbed at his lapels, her voice rising to a hysterical shriek. "She was going to leave fifty percent of the shipping stock to a medical research foundation in Julian's victim's name! She was going to ruin us! She was going to give the maid control of the estate administration! I did it for us, Richard! I did it for our children!"
Richard stepped back, detaching her fingers from his coat as if she were a venomous spider. He looked at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust that made it clear the gilded illusion of their marriage was permanently dead.
