Chapter 7 - The Shadows Gather

The storm that hit New York that evening was not snow, but a cold, torrential spring rain that beat furiously against the glass windows of the Sovereign Tower.
Inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was tense. Extra armed guards were deployed on every floor, and the security doors were electronically locked. Frank stood in the command room, frantically coordinating security feeds with Elias’s tactical teams stationed across the city.
I stood by the cribs in the nursery, holding a sleeping Rose while keeping one eye on Lily. My pulse was racing. Even though Marcus was gone, the dark shadow of his family seemed determined to haunt us.
Elias walked into the nursery wearing a black tactical vest over a dark sweater, a heavy holster strapped across his broad chest. He pulled on a pair of black leather gloves, his face carved from pure granite.
"Elias, please," I said, stepping toward him with fear in my eyes. "Don't go. Send your men. Julian is a mercenary—he’s setting a trap for you!"
Elias stopped in front of me, reaching out to gently touch my cheek with his gloved hand. The contrast between his lethal appearance and his tender touch made my chest ache.
"If I send my men without going myself, Julian will execute the hostages," Elias said calmly, his deep voice acting like an anchor. "A leader who hides behind his men loses his authority. I built this empire by standing at the front, Ava. I won't stop now."
"I can't lose you," I choked out, a tear slipping down my cheek. "We just found you."
Elias smiled softly, leaning down to press a warm, gentle kiss against my lips. "You won't lose me. I have three reasons to come back alive tonight—you, Lily, and Rose. No petty mercenary from Chicago is taking that away from me."
He stepped back and looked at Frank, who was standing at the doorway.
"Frank, you remain here with ten heavily armed men," Elias ordered firmly. "If a single unidentified soul enters this lobby, put them down. Ava and the children do not leave this safe room under any circumstances."
"Understood, Boss," Frank replied, his hand resting on his sidearm. "The penthouse is sealed."
Elias turned back to me one last time, giving me a sharp, confident nod. "Lock the door behind me, Ava. I will be back before sunrise."
With that, Elias turned and strode out of the penthouse, his tactical team falling in behind him like dark shadows.
Hours passed like torturous slow motion.
The rain slammed against the glass, making low, howling sounds in the wind. I stayed inside the reinforced safe room adjacent to the nursery, clutching a warm cup of tea while Frank paced the hallway outside, his radio clicking intermittently with static codes.
It was 2:00 AM when the lights in the penthouse suddenly flickered and died.
The grand chandeliers went out, plunging the entire penthouse into pitch blackness. A second later, the red emergency backup lights kicked in, casting a sinister, blood-red glow across the dark wood floors.
"Frank!" I called out, jumping to my feet and rushing toward the nursery door.
Frank burst into the room, his night-vision goggles resting on his forehead, his handgun drawn and ready. "Stay down, Ava! Someone just cut the main power grid to the entire tower!"
"Is it Julian?" I gasped, my blood running cold. "Did he trick Elias?"
"It was a diversion," Frank cursed under his breath, stepping back into the hallway while pointing his gun at the private elevator doors. "Julian didn't care about the warehouse at the docks! He used the hostages to draw Elias away from the building!"
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Heavy gunfire echoed through the outer hallway of the penthouse. Shouts, crashing glass, and the sharp crack of suppressed rifles shattered the quiet night.
"They're on the floor!" Frank yelled into his radio. "Team Alpha, secure the north corridor! They breached the private express elevator!"
Panic surged through my veins like ice water. I sprinted into the nursery, scooped up Lily and Rose into my arms, and backed tightly into the deepest corner of the reinforced safe room, locking the heavy steel door behind me.
Through the thick glass window of the safe room, I watched the horror unfold under the red emergency lights.
Three men dressed in dark tactical gear pushed through the shattered doors of the master living room. They moved with professional precision, firing ruthlessly at Elias’s guards. Frank fought like a lion, taking down two of the intruders before a burst of automatic fire struck him in the shoulder, knocking him back against the marble counter.
The leader of the mercenaries stepped forward. He pulled off his night-vision mask, revealing a face that sent a shockwave of terror straight to my core.
He looked just like Marcus—the same thin, cruel lips, the same cold, dead eyes, but broader, scar-covered, and far more dangerous.
Julian Miller.
Julian stepped over the fallen guards, his boots dripping with rain and blood. He looked around the grand penthouse with a disgusted, greedy smile.
"So this is where my pathetic brother's wife came to play house," Julian said, his loud voice echoing through the heavy steel door of the safe room. "Ava! I know you're in here! Open the door!"
I held my breath, clutching my crying twin daughters tightly against my pounding chest, praying that the reinforced steel door would hold.
"Your husband owed a lot of money to some very bad people in Chicago, Ava," Julian called out, slowly stepping toward the safe room with a heavy shotgun in his hands. "He promised them he’d deliver Elias Vance’s head on a platter in exchange for wiping his debts. He failed because he was weak. But I don't fail."

Julian stopped right in front of the reinforced glass window of the safe room. He looked through the glass, his dark eyes locking onto me hiding in the corner with my children.
"Open the door, Ava," Julian said, a terrifying grin spreading across his face as he raised the heavy shotgun. "Or I'll blow this glass open and take those little girls to Chicago myself!"
