Chapter 4 - THE TOXICOLOGY REPORT AND THE TRUTH

By 4:00 in the morning, the house was finally quiet, but it was not the quiet of peace. It was the heavy, solemn stillness that follows a violent storm.
Doña Leonor had left in a private hired vehicle, her heavy leather suitcases slammed into the trunk by the driver, leaving behind a wake of bitter curses and broken promises.
Downstairs in the master bedroom suite, Javier sat on the edge of the large bed. He had personally bathed little Mateo in warm water, soothing his high fever with a wet washcloth until the baby’s frantic screams finally softened into gentle, rhythmic breathing. The little boy was now sleeping soundly in a bassinet right beside the bed, his tiny hand resting against his cheek.
Valeria was lying in the middle of the bed, wrapped in a thick, warm fleece blanket. Javier had gently cleaned the cut on her lip with an antiseptic wipe, brushed her dark hair away from her face, and held her hand for over an hour without saying a word, simply letting her feel his warmth, his presence, and his protection.
Dr. Roberto Morales, Javier’s trusted personal physician and a lifelong family friend who had no ties to Doña Leonor, stepped softly into the master bedroom, carrying a leather medical bag and a digital tablet.
Javier immediately stood up, stepping out into the adjacent private sitting room and closing the bedroom door quietly behind him.
“How is she, Roberto?” Javier asked, his voice tired, raspy, and heavy with exhaustion.
“Physical contusions on her scalp, bruised shoulders, severe soft-tissue strain in her neck, and clear signs of prolonged sleep deprivation and severe nutritional neglect,” Dr. Morales reported, his expression deeply somber. “She is severely traumatized, Javier. Emotionally and physically exhausted beyond measure.”
Javier buried his face in his hands, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. “And the bottle? Did you analyze the contents?”
Dr. Morales set his digital tablet on the glass coffee table, bringing up a preliminary chemical breakdown report.
“I ran a rapid liquid chromatography screen in my mobile lab unit outside,” Dr. Morales said, pointing to the chemical structure on the screen. “The liquid in that amber bottle is a high-concentration mixture of liquid Diazepam mixed with a concentrated synthetic paralytic agent and a heavy dose of tasteless scopalamine derivative.”
Javier looked up, frowning in horrific confusion. “What does that mean?”
“It means,” Dr. Morales explained gravely, “it’s a chemical cocktail specifically designed to induce profound physical paralysis, severe short-term memory loss, extreme lethargy, and intense mental confusion while leaving the subject conscious enough to follow basic commands. In small, repeated doses over several weeks, it completely mimics the clinical symptoms of severe postpartum psychosis and mental incompetence.”
Javier felt a cold wave of horror wash over his entire body.
“It wasn't just a sedative,” Javier whispered, his voice trembling in sheer disgust. “She was poisoning her. She was chemically inducing madness in my wife.”
“Yes,” Dr. Morales confirmed softly. “If Valeria had continued taking this dose for another two or three weeks, it would have caused permanent neurological damage. She would have been entirely incapable of speaking coherently, testifying in court, or caring for herself. Any judge in Mexico would have looked at her medical state and immediately signed a court order placing her in a psychiatric institution and handing full custody of Mateo over to whoever applied for guardianship.”
Javier closed his eyes, pressing his thumbs into his temples as the absolute monstrosity of his mother’s plot was laid bare in indisputable scientific facts.
Doña Leonor hadn't just wanted to control the baby. She had wanted to completely erase Valeria from existence. She had wanted to destroy a brilliant young woman’s mind, steal her child, and maintain her absolute, matriarchal control over the Cárdenas bloodline and estate.
“Is it out of her system?” Javier asked, his voice dropping into a dark, resolute register.
“The chemical half-life is long, but with IV fluids and rest, her body will clear the toxins completely over the next forty-eight hours,” Dr. Morales assured him. “She will recover her physical health, Javier. But the psychological wounds... those will take time, immense patience, and specialized care.”
“I have all the time in the world,” Javier said fiercely. “I will burn down my entire career if that's what it takes to heal her.”
Dr. Morales placed a supportive hand on Javier’s shoulder. “What are you going to do about your mother?”
Javier reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone. He looked at the saved video file from the hidden alebrije camera—the high-definition recording of Doña Leonor pulling Valeria’s hair, threatening to drop the infant, and forcing the toxic dropper toward her face.
He also brought up the digital copy of the toxicology report Dr. Morales had just generated.
“My mother built her entire life on power, social status, and the absolute terror of public disgrace,” Javier said, his eyes turning into twin embers of cold, unyielding vengeance. “She thinks she can hide behind her family name in Monterrey. She thinks I am still her obedient little boy who will sweep this under the rug to protect the family reputation.”

Javier looked through the glass doors toward the sleeping form of his wife and son.
“She is about to learn that I am my wife’s husband first,” Javier said coldly. “And a father above all else.”
