Chapter 4 - THE GRAND IMPERIAL BALLROOM

The Grand Imperial Ballroom was a towering sea of gold leaf, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and white silk drapery. Over five hundred members of the city’s financial and political elite filled the room, sipping vintage champagne from long-stemmed flutes while a live chamber orchestra played softly on a velvet-draped stage.
At the center of the room stood Javier.
At fifty-two, he looked every bit the successful mogul he had spent a decade trying to become. His hair was silvered with calculated precision; his tux was custom-tailored; his smile was practiced, arrogant, and radiant. Beside him stood Victoria, draped in emeralds that caught the light of the chandeliers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Javier announced into a gold-plated microphone, his voice echoing smoothly across the hall. "Tonight, as Sterling Capital celebrates ten years of unprecedented growth, I am proud to announce our upcoming public listing on the New York Stock Exchange! We have secured a lead institutional investor who has underwritten our entire thirty-billion-dollar valuation!"
The room erupted into loud, aristocratic applause. Javier raised his glass, basking in the adoration, his ego expanding to fill the vaulted ceiling.
"To success!" Javier toasted, his eyes gleaming with triumphant greed. "To power! To the future!"
"To debt," a clear, deep voice echoed from the main entrance of the ballroom.
The voice was not loud, but it possessed a sharp, cutting resonance that sliced through the applause like a razor through silk.
The crowd turned as one.
The grand double mahogany doors had been thrown wide open.
Walking down the central velvet carpet was a tall, strikingly handsome young man in a dark charcoal suit. Beside him, resting her hand comfortably on his arm, was an older woman.
She wore an elegant, deep navy silk gown, her grey-streaked hair styled into a soft, majestic crown, her face carrying the quiet, unshakeable grace of a queen who had survived a long war.
It was me.
And beside me was my son.
Javier blinked, his smile stiffening. He looked at me, his brow furrowing as if trying to recall an unpleasant memory from a past life. Then his eyes drifted to Diego.
"What is the meaning of this security?" Javier snapped into the microphone, his tone laced with sudden irritation. "Who let these people in? This is a private corporate event!"
"I don't need permission to enter a building I bought two hours ago, Javier," Diego said smoothly, stepping directly toward the main stage, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets.
The room fell dead silent.
Javier let out a sharp, dismissive laugh, though a bead of cold sweat suddenly broke out along his collar. "Who the hell do you think you are, young man? I am the Chairman of Sterling Capital! Get out before I have you thrown into the street!"
"You tried throwing us into the street ten years ago," Diego replied, stopping five feet from the podium. He took off his glasses, polished them slowly with a white handkerchief, and replaced them on his nose, locking his dark eyes onto Javier’s pale face. "On my tenth birthday. Right after you slapped my mother in front of my cake."
A sudden, sharp gasp rippled through the five hundred guests. Victoria’s eyes widened in horror as she looked between Javier and the towering young man standing before them.
Javier’s face drained of color so fast he looked as if he had seen a phantom. His jaw slackened; his fingers trembled against the gold microphone.
"D... Diego?" Javier whispered, his voice cracking violently. "Marta...?"
"Look at him, Javier," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent ballroom, free of any fear, free of any shame. "Look at the son you abandoned because you thought he was a burden. Look at the boy you left sitting by a cake with burning candles."
"This is ridiculous!" Javier shouted, trying desperately to regain control of the room, his voice rising into a panicked shrill. "This is a low-class extortion attempt! Security! Clear these frauds out!"
Not a single security guard moved. Four heavy-set men in dark tactical suits wearing brass ARES Global badges stepped out from the shadows, quietly flanking the stage.
Arthur Vance, Javier’s chief legal counsel and father-in-law, pushed his way through the crowd, holding a vibrating tablet, his face completely gray with terror.
"Javier... stop talking," Arthur whispered frantically, grabbing Javier’s sleeve. "Stop talking right now!"
"What are you talking about, Arthur?!" Javier snarled, ripping his arm away. "Call the police!"
"Javier... ARES Global just executed a hostile takeover of our parent company twenty minutes ago," Arthur stammered, his voice carrying clearly to the front rows of guests. "They bought up eighty percent of our short-debt obligations... they own our credit lines... they own the underlying technology patents... they own Sterling Capital!"
Javier stared at his father-in-law as if he were speaking a foreign language. "What...? Who is ARES Global?!"
Diego stepped up onto the stage, taking the gold microphone directly out of Javier’s numb, helpless fingers.
He turned to face the five hundred richest investors in the city.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Diego said, his voice smooth, commanding, and utterly lethal. "My name is Diego Álvarez. I am the founder, Chief Executive Officer, and sole owner of ARES Global."

A massive, deafening uproar exploded across the ballroom. Photographers began flashing lights frantically, news reporters scrambled to record the scene, and investors gasped in utter shock.
"And as my first official act as the majority owner of Sterling Capital," Diego continued, looking down at his trembling father, "I am canceling the public stock offering. I am liquidating the firm’s assets. And I am calling in every single dollar of personal debt owed by Javier Álvarez-Sterling."
