Chapter 10 - THE RESTA UMANO

One year later.

A crisp, golden twilight settled over the Port of Seattle.

The massive cargo cranes of Park Global Logistics were illuminated by thousands of bright white work lights, casting long, dramatic shadows across the dark water of the bay.

On the top floor of the glass tower, the wide terrace overlooking the harbor was decorated with warm string lights, white orchids, and small cocktail tables.

Over fifty people had gathered for the official dedication of the Whitmore-Park Maritime Educational Center—a joint charitable venture designed to provide free vocational training and engineering scholarships for underprivileged youth in Washington.

Claire stood near the edge of the terrace, wearing a stunning midnight-blue evening gown that shimmered like the ocean beneath the moon. On her left hand, a brilliant emerald-cut diamond ring caught the light—a ring that Ethan had given her three months ago on a quiet boat trip off Mercer Island.

Beside her stood Ethan, wearing his tailored dark suit, his arm wrapped securely around her waist.

Sarah Lin walked over, holding a glass of champagne, her face glowing with genuine happiness. "The first class of sixty students begins next month, Claire. We’ve already received over four hundred applications."

"That’s amazing, Sarah," Claire said, clinking her glass against Sarah's. "Thank you for managing the endowment so brilliantly."

"I had a great teacher," Sarah said with a smile, looking at Ethan before walking off to speak with a city council member.

As the sun dipped completely beneath the Olympic Mountains, turning the sky into a breathtaking palette of purple, crimson, and gold, Ethan guided Claire away from the crowd, stepping to the quiet, far corner of the terrace.

Below them, the sound of cargo ships blowing their deep, melodic horns echoed across the bay—a sound of steady, uninterrupted trade, motion, and life.

Claire leaned her head against Ethan’s shoulder, her hand resting over his heart.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

Ethan looked out at the dark, vast ocean stretching into the Pacific horizon.

"I was thinking about ten years ago," Ethan answered quietly. "When I was lying bleeding in an alley three blocks from here. I thought my life was over that night."

He turned his head, looking down at the beautiful, radiant woman standing in his arms.

"I didn't know," Ethan whispered, his voice thick with deep emotion, "that Arthur Whitmore wasn't just saving my life. He was saving me so that one day, I could save his daughter."

Claire reached up, her fingers gently brushing back his dark hair, her eyes shining with tears of pure, unbroken joy.

"He knew, Ethan," Claire said softly, rising on her toes to press her lips gently against his jaw. "My father always knew who you were. He knew that the quiet man in the corner was the strongest anchor in the world."

And as the city of Seattle lit up beneath the stars, the gangster's threats faded forever into the dark waters of the bay, leaving behind two lives bound together by honor, protected by steel, and built to last forever.
