Chapter 4 - THE WEAVING OF DECEIT

The silence in the high-rise boardroom was suffocating, broken only by the sound of Matteo’s labored breathing and the steady drip of his blood onto the shattered glass.

Dante released his grip on Matteo’s collar, tossing him backward into his leather executive chair like a ragdoll. Matteo clutched his broken nose with a linen handkerchief, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage, pain, and mounting confusion.

Dante gestured to Paul, who walked over to the presentation monitor, plugged in an encrypted thumb drive, and tapped the screen.

High-definition surveillance footage immediately filled the wall-mounted display.

It showed the service entrance of the Moretti penthouse from the previous afternoon. The timestamp read 4:41 p.m. Vivien Rinaldi appeared on screen, wearing a heavy winter coat, carrying a thick black leather portfolio. The video tracked her through the private elevator, into Elena’s study, and out again thirty-eight minutes later—without the portfolio.

Matteo stared at the screen, his bloodied mouth dropping open. “Vivien... what is that?”

Vivien stood frozen near the window, her hands clenched into tight fists. “It’s a fabrication, Matteo! Bellarosa doctored the video—”

“I don't doctor videos, little girl,” Dante interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that made the glass walls vibrate slightly. “Paul, show him the printer logs.”

A second document appeared on the screen—internal network logs from Moretti Financial’s executive suite. It showed that forty-eight hours prior to the assault, Vivien’s private user account had accessed, printed, and duplicated forty pages of shell-company ledgers from an encrypted server.

The exact pages Matteo had found scattered across his kitchen floor before he struck his wife.

Dante stepped closer to Vivien, hovering over her like a shadow. “For eighteen months, Vivien has been redirecting two percent of every offshore union contract into a private account in the Cayman Islands. Total theft: fourteen million dollars. She knew Elena was doing a legitimate audit of the family accounts to secure her baby’s trust fund. Vivien knew that the moment Elena finished that audit, the theft would be discovered, and Matteo would have her fed to the fish in the Hudson.”

Vivien’s composure completely collapsed. “He was going to kill me anyway!” she screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. “Matteo is a paranoid monster! He was looking for an excuse to eliminate Elena because he thought she was getting too independent! I just gave him what he wanted!”

Matteo stared at his chief financial officer in absolute horror. The sickening realization hit him like a physical blow: he had been manipulated into beating his pregnant wife into a coma to cover up another woman’s financial betrayal.

Matteo stood up, shaking with rage, reaching toward his desk drawer where a handgun was hidden. “You treacherous bitch—”

Dante moved with terrifying efficiency. He stepped into Matteo’s path, grabbed him by the throat, and shoved him back down into his chair with enough force to crack the wood frame.

“Sit down,” Dante commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. “You don't get to play the executioner today, Matteo. You lost that right the second you laid a hand on a pregnant woman.”

Dante turned to Paul. “Take Vivien downstairs. Secure her in the Red Hook warehouse. She stays alive until Elena wakes up and decides her fate.”

“No! Please! Dante, no!” Vivien shrieked as Paul expertly cuffed her wrists behind her back and dragged her out of the boardroom. Her screams echoed down the executive hallway until the heavy doors chimed shut.

Dante stood over Matteo, looking down at the broken, bleeding mob boss with absolute contempt.

“Here is how this works, Matteo,” Dante said, leaning down until their eyes were inches apart. “You are going to sign over full legal guardianship of your unborn child to Carol Hartwell. You are going to transfer seventy percent of your legitimate real estate assets into an irrevocable trust for Elena. And if she doesn't survive that coma...”

Dante reached out, gently patting Matteo’s bruised cheek with two fingers.

“...I will personally come back to this room, and I will tear your world apart brick by brick until nothing remains.”
