PART 3: The Footage That Destroyed Her Perfect Mask

Jonathan stared at the monitor without blinking.

The office felt smaller with every second.

Beside him, Sophie sat curled against his side beneath a blanket, her small fingers clutching the fabric tightly.

On the screen, Monica stood over the little girl in the playroom.

Gone was the charming smile she showed at charity galas.

Gone was the warm voice she used around guests.

This Monica looked cold.

Impatient.

Cruel.

Sophie sat on the floor coloring quietly.

Monica suddenly snatched the crayons from her hands.

The little girl looked up in surprise.

Even without sound, Jonathan could see her mouth forming a question.

Monica answered by pointing toward the corner.

Sophie slowly stood and walked there.

Then she remained facing the wall.

Minutes passed.

Ten.

Twenty.

Thirty.

The little girl never moved.

Jonathan's stomach twisted.

"What is she doing?" he whispered.

Sophie lowered her head.

"Time-outs."

Jonathan looked at her.

"How often?"

The child hesitated.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Sometimes all day."

Something dark flashed across Jonathan's face.

He turned back toward the monitor.

The footage continued.

At one point Sophie shifted her weight.

Monica immediately grabbed her shoulder and shoved her back toward the wall.

Not hard enough to leave obvious evidence.

Hard enough to frighten a child.

Jonathan's jaw clenched.

He fast-forwarded.

The next clip appeared.

The dining room.

Sophie sat alone at the large table.

A plate rested in front of her.

Monica entered.

She said something.

Sophie shook her head.

Monica picked up the plate and carried it away.

The little girl watched helplessly.

Hours later the footage showed Sophie still sitting there.

Hungry.

Waiting.

Jonathan froze.

"Sophie..."

The child stared at the carpet.

"I wasn't allowed dinner."

The billionaire's hands began shaking.

"When?"

"Lots of times."

His chest tightened painfully.

"What did she tell you?"

Sophie swallowed.

"She said Daddy wouldn't care."

The words hit harder than any punch.

Jonathan closed his eyes.

For months he had traveled.

Meetings.

Acquisitions.

Conferences.

Private flights.

He had convinced himself he was building a better future for his daughter.

Meanwhile his daughter had been suffering alone inside his own home.

The realization was unbearable.

A sudden knock interrupted the silence.

"Jonathan."

Monica's voice came through the door.

Soft.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"We need to talk."

Jonathan ignored her.

Instead he opened another camera feed.

This one showed the upstairs hallway.

The date stamp displayed three weeks earlier.

Monica walked toward Sophie's bedroom carrying something.

Jonathan zoomed in.

A small stuffed rabbit.

Sophie's favorite toy.

The rabbit never came back out.

Jonathan switched cameras.

Now he was viewing a storage room.

The footage revealed Monica entering alone later that afternoon.

She opened a cabinet.

Then tossed the rabbit inside.

Jonathan felt Sophie stiffen beside him.

"My bunny," she whispered.

His throat tightened.

"You thought you lost it?"

Sophie nodded.

"Monica said I was careless."

Jonathan stared at the screen.

One lie after another.

One cruelty after another.

Methodical.

Deliberate.

Planned.

He continued searching.

Then he found something worse.

Much worse.

The backyard camera.

Two weeks earlier.

Sophie sat on a garden bench reading a picture book.

Monica approached carrying a small gardening tool.

A metal hand rake.

Jonathan leaned closer.

Monica appeared angry.

Very angry.

She grabbed Sophie's wrist.

The little girl tried pulling away.

Monica tightened her grip.

Then—

Scratch.

The metal tines dragged across Sophie's hand.

Jonathan froze.

Sophie immediately began crying.

Monica released her.

The child stared at the fresh scratches in shock.

Then Monica crouched and pointed a finger directly at her face.

Threatening.

Warning.

Silencing.

Jonathan's blood ran cold.

Those were the scratches.

The same scratches he had seen only hours earlier.

The room became utterly silent.

Sophie buried her face against his shoulder.

"I didn't mean to be bad," she whispered.

Jonathan felt his heart break.

"No."

His voice cracked.

"No, sweetheart."

Fresh tears filled his eyes.

"You were never bad."

Outside the office, Monica knocked again.

Harder this time.

"Jonathan!"

No answer.

He was no longer listening.

Because another camera feed had just appeared.

The nursery.

Three nights ago.

Nearly midnight.

Sophie slept peacefully in bed.

Monica entered quietly.

She walked to the little girl's bedside.

For a moment she simply stared down at her.

Then she spoke.

The audio wasn't perfect.

But Jonathan heard enough.

"You should've gone with your mother."

The billionaire stopped breathing.

Sophie had lost her mother years earlier.

The woman had died from illness.

Monica knew exactly what she was saying.

The footage continued.

Monica leaned closer.

"And if you're not careful, Daddy won't want you either."

Sophie stirred in her sleep.

A tear slid down Jonathan's cheek.

Not because he was emotional.

Because he was furious.

The kind of fury that arrives only when someone hurts a child.

His child.

The office phone suddenly rang.

Jonathan glanced at the caller ID.

It was his chief of security.

He answered immediately.

"Sir."

The man's voice sounded urgent.

"We found something."

Jonathan stood.

"What?"

"There are deleted files missing from the security archive."

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of files?"

"A lot of them involve Miss Sophie."

The room went silent.

The chief continued.

"Our technician recovered several clips."

Jonathan's grip tightened around the phone.

"And?"

The answer made his blood turn to ice.

"Sir... Monica wasn't acting alone."

Jonathan slowly turned toward the locked office door.

Outside, Monica stood waiting.

Believing she could still explain everything.

Believing she could still manipulate him.

Believing she could still control the story.

She was wrong.

May you like

Because somewhere inside those recovered files was the truth.

And Jonathan was about to discover that the woman he married had been hiding something far darker than child abuse.
