Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason

The heavy oak door swung open, and Rocco Marciano stepped into the kitchen.

He was a hulking mass of a man, easily six-foot-three, with broad shoulders, a thick neck, and a shaved head. He wore a dark leather jacket over a tight black shirt, and a heavy gold chain glittered against his collarbone. He looked relaxed, smelling strongly of alcohol and cheap cigar smoke.

"Boss?" Rocco said, stepping into the room, his voice a deep, rough gravelly rasp. "Gianna said you needed me down here for—"

Rocco stopped mid-sentence.

His eyes caught the locked deadbolt setup, then swung to Carmine standing casually by the island, and finally drifted into the dim corner of the room, where Ivy sat shivering on the stool, holding a blood-stained white handkerchief to her throat.

For a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine surprise crossed Rocco’s heavy features, instantly replaced by a smug, arrogant arrogance. He didn't understand the dangerous room he had just walked into.

"Ah," Rocco chuckled, shaking his head as he took another step forward. "I see. The little mouse went running to the master."

Carmine did not move. His hands remained resting lightly on the edge of the granite island.

"Rocco," Carmine said softly. "Look at her face."

Rocco glanced dismissively toward Ivy, a cynical smirk curling his lips. "Boss, come on. She’s just a maid taking out the trash. She got mouthy with me outside while I was taking a smoke break. I had to teach her a little manners, remind her who keeps this house safe. You know how these lower staff get—"

Before Rocco could finish his sentence, Carmine moved.

It was not a human speed; it was a blur of calculated violence.

Carmine crossed the ten feet of slate floor in an instant. Before Rocco could raise his hands or reach for the holster concealed under his leather jacket, Carmine snatched a heavy, solid-brass decorative pitcher from the counter and slammed it sideways into the side of Rocco’s jaw with sickening force.

CRACK.

The sound of shattering bone echoed through the tiled kitchen like a gunshot.

Rocco let out a choked roar of pain as the force of the blow drove his massive body sideways. He stumbled, spraying blood across the white tiles, crashing heavily against the stainless steel preparation table.

Ivy let out a sharp gasp, pulling her knees tighter against her chest, horrified by the terrifying speed of Carmine's attack.

Rocco spat a mouthful of blood and broken teeth onto the floor, his face twisted in sudden, furious rage. "Are you out of your fucking mind, Carmine?!" he bellowed, reaching wildly into his jacket for his firearm. "Over a fucking servant?!"

Carmine didn't give him the chance.

He closed the distance instantly, grabbing Rocco’s right wrist with a crushing grip, twisting the brute’s arm backward with violent leverage. There was a sharp POP as Rocco’s shoulder dislocated. Rocco screamed in agony, dropping his heavy silver pistol to the floor.

Carmine kicked the weapon cleanly across the slate floor, sending it sliding harmlessly beneath the far cabinets.

Then, gripping the back of Rocco’s thick neck, Carmine drove the giant’s head down hard into the solid granite edge of the kitchen island.

THUD.

Rocco groaned weakly, his legs buckling beneath him as he slid to his knees, his forehead split open, blood pouring freely down his face, blinding his left eye.

Carmine stood over him, breathing evenly, his white shirt pristine except for a few tiny droplets of red on his rolled-up sleeves. He casually smoothed down his hair, looking down at the groveling enforcer with absolute disgust.

"You misunderstood your position in this house, Rocco," Carmine said, his voice dropping into an icy, demonic whisper that filled every corner of the room. "You believed that because you earn money for me, you are allowed to behave like a wild dog under my roof."

"Carmine... please..." Rocco wheezed, clutching his dislocated shoulder, his arrogant tough-guy facade completely shattered. "I’ve worked for you for eight years... I brought in millions from the docks..."

"And yet, you failed to comprehend a fundamental rule of my organization," Carmine interrupted smoothly. He reached out, grabbed Rocco by his gold chain, and dragged the massive man’s bleeding face up until they were eye to eye.

"Everything inside this perimeter belongs to me," Carmine stated, his grey eyes dead and cold. "The land, the stone, the food... and the people who work here. When you lay your filthy hands on a girl who works under my roof, you are not just hurting a maid, Rocco. You are stealing from my authority. You are disrespecting me."

Carmine delivered a swift, brutal kick to Rocco’s ribs. A sharp crack signaled another broken bone, and Rocco collapsed onto his side, gasping for air, weeping quietly on the kitchen floor.

Carmine turned his back on the broken enforcer as if he were nothing more than garbage waiting to be cleared away. He walked over to the sink, turned on the faucet, and casually washed his hands, wiping them dry on a paper towel.

Then, he tapped his phone once more.

"Gianna," Carmine said calmly into the speaker. "Send two men with heavy plastic tarps to the lower kitchen. Tell them to bring Rocco to the eastern warehouse. He is no longer employed by this family."

Carmine ended the call and threw the paper towel into the trash.
