Chapter 2 - The Harvest of Hubris

The humiliation continued for what felt like an eternity. Each time I tried to rise, Madison would blast the water, knocking me back into the muck, my coat soaking up the mud like a sponge. Every guest was recording. They were building a digital monument to my suffering, a viral video that would surely be the talk of the morning news cycle.
I stayed silent. I didn't beg. I didn't scream. I simply focused on the cold. The cold was a teacher; it sharpened my mind and erased the last vestiges of the motherly love that Julian hadn't deserved in years.
"Enough," Julian finally said, though his voice lacked conviction. He sounded bored, not bothered. "Madison, leave the poor woman alone. Security, escort her to the street."
Madison lowered the hose, her breath coming in short, excited gasps. She looked at Julian, her eyes wide and innocent. "I just wanted to make sure she was clean, babe. Can't have people thinking we’re living in a dump."
She leaned over me, her perfume sickeningly sweet. "You heard him, trash. Move."
Security guards grabbed my arms, dragging me across the wet stone. My feet dragged, leaving a trail of filth across the pristine walkway. They tossed me unceremoniously out the gate, where I landed in the gutter. The gates slammed shut, the heavy iron lock clicking with a sound that felt like a final judgment.
I didn't move for a long time. I sat in the rain and the mud, feeling the cold seep into my marrow. But I wasn't defeated. I pulled a small, waterproof device from the inner pocket of my coat.
Every single moment of the last hour had been recorded.
I had hidden cameras in the buttons of my coat, microphones in my lapels, and a high-definition capture device in my spectacles. I had the laughter. I had the cheers. I had the specific, vile words Madison had uttered. And, most importantly, I had the footage of Julian watching his own mother be assaulted without lifting a finger.
I pulled out my phone and dialed a number.
"It’s done," I whispered.
"Copy that, Mrs. Thorne," a voice replied—the head of my private security detail. "The legal team is ready. The servers are staged. Do we proceed?"
"Yes," I said, a dark, thin smile spreading across my face. "Release the footage to every major network. And contact the bank. I want the Thorne Enterprises board of directors notified of an emergency session in six hours. Use the internal leverage."
"And the guest list?"
"Every one of them," I said. "Send a personal notification to every CEO, every politician, and every socialite who was standing in that garden. Tell them that their involvement in the assault of a private citizen has been logged, and that they will be hearing from my attorneys by dawn."
I stood up, the mud peeling away from my clothes. I was wet, I was shaking, and I was absolutely, perfectly prepared.
I watched as the lights of the estate continued to glow, oblivious to the fact that their world was currently being dismantled, byte by byte.
I had built Thorne Enterprises from the ground up. I knew how the foundations were laid, and I knew exactly which keystone to pull to bring the whole structure crashing down. Madison thought she had won the day. She thought she had established herself as the mistress of the house.

But she didn't realize that in her arrogance, she hadn't just humiliated a beggar. She had humiliated Eleanor Thorne in front of the very people she was desperate to impress.
The storm was just beginning.
