Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

Three weeks later, the final trap snapped shut.
Evelyn sat inside a private room at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Beside her sat Arthur Vance and Sarah Lin. Across the mahogany table sat Assistant State’s Attorney Catherine Walsh, along with two senior financial crimes investigators.
"Mrs. Parker," Prosecutor Walsh said, reviewing the vast array of documents laid out before her. "In my fifteen years with this office, I have rarely seen a case of financial elder abuse so thoroughly documented. The combination of forged mortgage papers, fraudulent medical claims, and organized wire fraud through Apex Ventures gives us more than enough to file felony indictments against both Ryan Parker and Chloe Vance."
Evelyn listened quietly. A month ago, hearing these words would have broken her heart into a thousand pieces. Today, she felt only a deep, profound sense of release.
"What is the next step?" Evelyn asked.
"We are issuing arrest warrants this afternoon," Walsh replied. "Because of the total monetary damage—which exceeds six hundred thousand dollars—both defendants face severe criminal penalties. Ryan Parker will be charged with aggravated identity theft, grand larceny, and scheme to defraud. Chloe Vance will be charged as a co-conspirator."
That evening, local news crews gathered outside a high-end restaurant in Chicago's Fulton Market district, where Ryan and Chloe were attempting to sell off equipment from their failed printing shop to an undercover buyer.
As Ryan handed over forged ownership documents for three commercial printing presses—machinery that had actually been purchased using loans under Evelyn’s name—plainclothes officers stepped out from the shadows.
"Ryan Parker," an officer announced, pulling out handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny and felony identity fraud."
Ryan froze, his hands trembling as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "This is a mistake!" he shouted, looking frantically at the news cameras flashing in the distance. "My mother is behind this! She’s mentally unstable! Call my mother!"
"Your mother is the one who pressed charges, Mr. Parker," the arresting officer said coldly, leading him toward a marked police cruiser.

Watching the evening news broadcast from her suite at the Drake Hotel, Evelyn saw her son’s face illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of the police car. For a brief second, a tear tracked down her cheek—not for the man Ryan had become, but for the innocent boy she had once held in her arms.
She picked up her glass of iced tea, looked at the screen, and quietly whispered, "Goodbye, Ryan."
