Chapter 8 - The Evidence Mounts

While Julian was spiraling into rock bottom in Queens, I spent two weeks working eighteen hours a day at the headquarters of Vance Enterprises.

Alongside Richard Miller, a team of six forensic accountants, and Special Agent Marcus Vance from the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, we systematically untangled twenty years of financial corruption.

The deeper we dug into Julian’s private files, the worse it got.

He hadn't just embezzled money for his own luxuries; he had cut corners on commercial building safety inspections, bribed local city planning officials to bypass environmental fire codes, and systematically shortchanged the pension funds of over three hundred low-level building maintenance workers who had served the company for decades.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, I called an all-hands assembly of the entire company workforce in the main auditorium of the Manhattan tower.

Over four hundred employees—secretaries, janitors, building engineers, project managers, and junior accountants—filled the seats, looking nervous, anxious, and fearful for their jobs.

I stepped up to the podium, wearing a simple blue suit, looking out at the faces of the people who had kept this company running while Julian bled it dry.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the speaker system. “I know the past two weeks have been filled with uncertainty, rumors, and fear. Many of you have heard that Julian Vance has been removed from his position as Chief Executive Officer.”

A quiet murmur ran through the crowd.

“I am here today to tell you the truth,” I continued. “For twenty years, Julian Vance ran this firm as a private piggy bank for his personal indulgence. He diverted your health insurance funds, he froze your retirement pensions, and he put this company on the brink of bankruptcy.”

The crowd grew dead silent.

“As the newly appointed Executive Chairwoman of the Vance Family Trust,” I declared, looking directly into the crowd, “I have taken full personal control of the primary estate. Yesterday afternoon, I authorized the immediate transfer of fifteen million dollars from the family’s private bond reserves back into the employee pension fund.”

The entire room erupted into sudden, shocked gasps.

“Every dollar that was stolen from your retirement will be restored with interest by the end of this week,” I announced, as tears began to roll down the faces of several older maintenance workers in the front row. “We are restoring full medical benefits, reinstating annual cost-of-living bonuses, and implementing an open-door financial transparency policy for all employees.”

A single elderly janitor in the middle row stood up and began clapping his hands.

Within five seconds, all four hundred employees were on their feet, unleashing a deafening, standing ovation that echoed off the auditorium walls.

Standing in the wings of the stage, Richard Miller smiled warmly, nodding his head in deep approval.

“Eleanor would be so proud of you, Clara,” Miller whispered as I walked off the stage. “You aren't just destroying Julian. You’re building something beautiful from the ruins he left behind.”

“Julian didn't build this company, Richard,” I said, looking out at the clapping crowd. “The people in this room built it. It’s time they finally got what they deserve.”
