Chapter 3 - The Broken Pavilion

By 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the grand estate of Arthur Langdon was experiencing the slow, hungover quiet that always followed a massive high-society gala. The white silk tents in the backyard were slightly deflated, the lawns littered with empty champagne bottles, and the smell of stale catering food hung heavy in the damp air.

Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, wearing a silk smoking jacket, leisurely reading the morning financial papers. His wife, Eleanor, sat opposite him, massaging her temples while Whitney lounged on the sofa, admiring the massive three-carat diamond ring that the Sterling family heir had placed on her finger the night before.

"The Sterlings were thoroughly impressed, Arthur," Eleanor murmured, sipping her black coffee. "The match is perfect. The wedding will be the social event of the season. It’s just a shame Claire couldn't be here to see it. It would have done her some good to see what a successful life actually looks like."

"Claire is stubborn," Arthur said, not even looking up from his paper. "She called me last night from some clinic, trying to create a scene about a car accident. The usual bid for attention. I told her we were hosting Whitney’s night and hung up. She needs to learn that her choices have consequences."

"She’s just jealous, Dad," Whitney said, pouting her painted lips as she held her hand up to the sunlight. "She’s always hated that I was the one who got the looks and the social grace. It’s not my fault she ended up a single mother living in a tiny apartment."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the dining room were pushed open with tremendous force.

Arthur frowned, ready to reprimand the butler for such a vulgar display, but the words died in his throat as Richard Langdon stepped into the room. Behind him were two men in dark, official suits carrying leather document cases, and two local police officers bearing official court summonses.

Arthur went completely white, the newspaper slipping from his fingers. "Richard? What the hell are you doing in my house? You were banned from this property nine years ago!"

"This isn't your house anymore, Arthur," Richard said, his voice dropping into the silent room like a block of concrete. He walked to the center of the room, his long charcoal coat sweeping behind him. "And as for what I am doing here—I am here to collect a debt."

Eleanor stood up, her social mask completely shattering into a look of shrill outrage. "Richard! This is Whitney’s engagement morning! How dare you bring these people into our home!"

"Whitney’s engagement morning is officially cancelled," Richard said, signaling the men behind him. One of the official suits stepped forward, placing a thick, stamped document directly onto Arthur’s plate.

"Arthur Langdon," the lawyer stated clearly. "As of 8:30 a.m. today, the First National Commercial Bank has executed a total foreclosure warrant on the Langdon Plaza project due to severe compliance fraud and failure to maintain the debt-to-equity ratio required under the primary covenant. The secondary collateral for that forty-million-dollar loan was this primary residence and all associated liquid accounts under the Langdon Legacy Trust."

The lawyer looked at Arthur with an expression of cold professionalism. "The underlying debt was purchased three months ago by Langdon Global Holdings—managed by Richard Langdon. The foreclosure has been approved by a state judge. You have precisely two hours to vacate this property."

"No... no, this is impossible!" Arthur screamed, his voice rising into a terrified, manic shriek as he scrambled out of his chair, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the legal documents. "I am the director of the trust! You can't foreclose on a family estate!"

"The trust became null and void the moment you used fraudulent construction manifests to secure the secondary loans, Arthur," Richard said, stepping forward until he was inches from his younger brother's face. The raw, commanding power radiating from Richard made Arthur take a panicked step backward. "You thought you were a king because you could spend forty million dollars of our grandfather's money on silk tents and diamond rings for your favorite child. But you forgot that every single brick of your empire was financed by my grace."

Richard’s eyes turned into twin chips of frozen steel. "Last night, my daughter Claire called you from a hospital bed. She was bleeding, her arm was shattered, and your grandson was crying in a nursery. You told her she made her own bed and hung up the phone."

Arthur’s jaw dropped, the sudden realization of his fatal error crashing down on him like a tidal wave. "Richard... look, I didn't know it was that serious... I thought she was just exaggerating—"

"You left your own blood to rot in a trauma center for the sake of a party," Richard whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, absolute quiet. "So now, I am going to make sure you learn exactly how it feels to have no one answer the call. The moving trucks are already outside, Arthur. Take your clothes. Leave the silver. And get out of my sight."
