Chapter 2 - The Mask of Eleanor

To the high-society circles of Minneapolis and Duluth, Eleanor "Vanessa" Vance was a modern-day Cinderella.
She had appeared in Julian Thorne’s life eighteen months after his first wife, Clara, had tragically died of a sudden illness. Vanessa was beautiful, cultured, and possessed an elegant, soft-spoken charm that seemed to soothe the raw edges of Julian’s grief. She was a curator for a boutique art gallery, a woman who spoke of charity, of healing, and of wanting nothing more than to help Julian rebuild his shattered world.
At least, that was the mask she wore.
In reality, Vanessa Vance was a woman drowning in debt, driven by a desperate, borderline-psychopathic ambition to secure a life of limitless wealth. Her family’s prominent name was nothing more than an empty shell; her father had died bankrupt, and her mother had spent her remaining years desperately borrowing from wealthy relatives to maintain the illusion of prosperity. Vanessa had realized early on that her beauty and her ability to mimic empathy were her greatest assets.
When she met Julian Thorne at a charity gala, she knew she had found her ultimate mark.
Julian was wealthy beyond imagination, but more importantly, he was vulnerable. He was a grieving widower with a young daughter who desperately needed a mother’s touch. Vanessa had spent months researching Julian’s preferences, his late wife’s personality, and the exact kind of woman he would trust. She had played her role to perfection, slowly worming her way into his heart, his home, and eventually, his bed.
Three months ago, Julian had placed a flawless, twelve-carat blue diamond ring on her finger.
But once the ring was secure, the mask began to slip.
Vanessa didn't want to be a mother to Elena. To her, the six-year-old girl was a constant, irritating reminder of the first wife, a living obstacle to her complete control over the Thorne estate. When Julian was home, Vanessa was the picture of maternal warmth, baking cookies with Elena, brushing her hair, and speaking to her in a soft, cooing voice that made Julian’s heart swell with gratitude.
But the moment the gates of the estate closed behind Julian’s departing car, the warmth evaporated.
It started with small things. Vanessa would lock Elena’s playroom door, claiming she was "resting." She would convenient forget to buy the girl's favorite foods, replacing them with strict, diet-conscious meals that Elena hated. Then came the psychological torment. She began telling Elena that her father was tired of her, that he only kept her around out of pity, and that if she didn't behave perfectly, she would be sent away.
Elena, terrified of losing the only parent she had left, kept silent. She withdrew into herself, her bright, laughter-filled personality slowly fading into a quiet, haunted survival mode.
But Vanessa’s greed was limitless.
She wasn't content with just being a wife; she wanted to secure the Thorne fortune permanently. She had spent the last two months working quietly with a corrupt family lawyer to draft a series of prenuptial amendments that would grant her a massive share of Julian’s assets in the event of a divorce. She was planning a lifestyle of absolute luxury, and she had already begun quietly cataloging the priceless art and heirlooms inside the Thorne mansion, planning which ones she would sell first.
What she didn't realize was that Julian Thorne had not built a shipping empire by being blind.
He had noticed the subtle shift in his daughter’s demeanor. He had seen how Elena flinched when Vanessa reached out to touch her hair. He had seen the tiny, uncharacteristic bruises on the girl’s wrists, which Vanessa had smoothly explained away as "rough play at the park."
Julian had wanted to believe his fiancé. He had desperately wanted to believe that his family was whole again. But the cold, analytical mind that had made him a billionaire refused to let him ignore the discrepancies.
So, before he left for his business trip to Chicago, he had contacted a high-end private security firm. They had arrived in the middle of the night while Vanessa was asleep, installing a network of hidden, pinhole cameras throughout the mansion’s common areas, all connected to a secure, encrypted server that Julian could access directly from his phone.
He had hoped he would see nothing. He had hoped he was just being an overprotective, paranoid father.
Instead, on his second day in Chicago, he had opened the app during a lunch break and watched in absolute, paralyzing horror as Vanessa dragged Elena out of her bedroom by her hair, screaming at her for leaving a toy on the stairs. He had watched as she forced the little girl to her knees, handing her a bottle of industrial-grade bleach and a heavy scrub brush, demanding she clean the entire foyer until her hands bled.
Julian had stood up from his meeting, walked out of the room without saying a word to his business partners, and boarded his private jet.

During the two-hour flight back to Duluth, he had sat in the darkened cabin, watching the live feed of his daughter being tortured by the woman he had promised to marry. Every tear Elena cried, every cruel word Vanessa uttered, was burned into his memory like hot iron.
And now, he was home.
