Chapter 4 - The Sisters of Aurora

The silence inside the stone cottage was suffocating, broken only by the distant, rhythmic rumble of my truck's engine where Sophie sat warm and safe.

"You knew," I said, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous register that made Laura take a step back, her hands raised in a defensive gesture. "You knew Sarah was your sister. You knew your mother killed her."

"Leo, please," Laura sobbed, the tears freezing on her cheeks as she stepped into the cottage, the cold air swirling around us. "It's not what you think. I didn't want any of this. I loved Sarah. We both hated our mother."

"You loved her so much that you let her mother murder her, and then you took her place in my bed?" I hissed, stepping forward until I was towering over her, the shadow of my frame blocking the dim light from the door. "You’ve been lying to me for six years, Laura. Every single day. Every time you looked at my daughter, you knew she was your niece, and you knew her mother was buried in a grave because of your family's greed."

"My mother forced me!" Laura screamed, her voice cracking as she collapsed against a stack of old garden furniture, her face in her hands. "You don't know what Evelyn is capable of, Leo! When Sarah ran away with you, my mother threatened to destroy everyone we cared about. She has judges in her pocket, she has the police department, she has everything! After Sarah died... after she was gone... my mother told me that if I didn't marry you, if I didn't keep you from looking into the medical records, she would have you arrested for child neglect while you were deployed. She was going to take Sophie away from you forever and lock her in a boarding school in Europe!"

I stared at her, the anger in my veins slowly turning into a cold, clinical disgust.

"So you did it to protect me?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "You lied to me for six years to keep me from losing my daughter?"

"Yes!" she wept. "I grew to love you, Leo. And I love Sophie. I raised her as my own because she is my own. She’s my sister’s child. I wanted to keep her safe from my mother. I thought if we just stayed quiet, if we let Evelyn believe she had won, we could live a normal life."

"And what happened today, Laura?" I demanded, pointing the flashlight directly at her face. "Why is Sophie locked in a freezing storage shed? Why did your mother leave her here to freeze?"

"Because Sophie found the key," Laura whispered, her shoulders shaking. "She was playing in my mother's study last weekend, and she found the key to this cabinet. She saw the folders. She didn't understand what they meant, but she told my mother she saw her biological mother's name on a file. My mother went into a panic. She realized the whole structure was about to fall apart. She wanted to punish her... she wanted to break her spirit so she would never speak of it again."

"And you let her do it," I said, my voice flat.

"I didn't know!" Laura cried. "I swear to you, Leo! My mother told me she was taking Sophie to the gardens. When I couldn't reach her on her phone, I realized something was wrong. That's why I was so scared when you came home. I was trying to find them... I was trying to stop her."

"Where is your mother now, Laura?"

"She's at the downtown office of Vance Real Estate," Laura said, her eyes wide with terror. "She's meeting with her legal team and her security chief. They are preparing to file for emergency custody of Sophie tomorrow morning, using a fabricated medical report claiming you are suffering from severe PTSD and are unfit to care for her. They are going to take her, Leo. Tonight is our only chance."

I looked down at the folders in my hand, then at the woman who had shared my life, my home, and my daughter's upbringing under a mountain of lies.

"Get in your car, Laura," I said softly.

"Leo?"

May you like

"Get in your car and drive away," I repeated, turning my back on her as I gathered the red folders and walked toward my truck. "If I ever see your face again, if you ever come near my daughter, I will show you what a soldier does to an enemy in his house. The marriage is over. Your family is over."

I walked out of the cottage, leaving her weeping in the dark stone room, and climbed into the warm cab of my truck.
