Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

“You... you came home?” Eleanor stammered, her arrogant confidence instantly evaporating into thin air.

“I am sitting in the hospital,” I said, every word dropping like ice. “Maya has a severe uterine infection from neglect. Sepsis was hours away. Liam was hypothermic because you turned the heat down to fifty-five degrees before taking my cash, my food, and my formula to go drink champagne in South Beach.”

“David, sweetie, listen to me—” Eleanor began to panic, her voice cracking. “It’s not what it looks like! Mark just borrowed that cash for the emergency travel fund! We were coming back on Tuesday!”

“You have two hours to check out of that hotel,” I said coldly. “Because in thirty minutes, the NYPD will be receiving a copy of the security footage from my apartment showing Mark stealing five thousand dollars from my desk, and Chloe packing up my son's prescription formula.”

“David, you can't do this to your own family!” Chloe’s voice screamed from the background, having grabbed the phone from our mother. “We’re your blood! You’re ruining our New Year over a girl who isn't even from a good family!”

“You are no longer my family,” I answered.

I hung up the phone.

I immediately placed a call to Detective Robert Vance at the Brooklyn 78th Precinct. I explained the situation clearly and uploaded the high-definition footage showing the theft of the cash, the deliberate endangerment of a dependent adult recovering from major surgery, and child neglect.

Because of the high dollar amount stolen ($5,000 in cash plus $14,000 wired under false pretenses for caregiving services) and the severe medical condition of the victim, Detective Vance issued an immediate grand larceny and endangerment warrant.

By 2:00 PM, while Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark were frantically trying to board a budget flight back to New York using their own maxed-out personal credit cards, local law enforcement in Florida was already notified of their travel manifest.

They thought they were coming home to negotiate, to manipulate, to play the family card and guilt me into sweeping it under the rug.

They didn't realize they were flying straight into a legal trap.
