Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE OF SECRETS

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed Elena by her arm, hauling her to her feet, and shoved her down the secondary service hallway toward the back of the house.

"Move!" I hissed.

"What about Carla?" Elena gasped, struggling to keep her balance on her bruised legs.

"Leave her!"

We sprinted through the commercial-grade kitchen just as three men dressed in dark tactical gear stepped into the central hallway. One of them held a suppressed firearm pointed directly at the floor.

"Victoria Hartwell!" a stern, familiar voice boomed through the high-ceilinged house. "Stop right there! Make this easy on yourself!"

I froze for a split second near the kitchen island.

I knew that voice.

It was Arthur Vance. My late husband's chief legal trustee and the senior managing partner of the law firm that handled my entire corporate estate. The man who sat at my dinner table every Christmas. The man who had delivered the eulogy at Richard’s funeral.

"Arthur?" I breathed, staring through the glass kitchen partition.

Arthur walked into the kitchen, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, stepping over the shattered wine glass on the floor. He carried an leather briefcase in his left hand, while two armed men stood flanked on either side of him like silent bodyguards.

"I must admit, Victoria, you’ve always been remarkably persistent," Arthur said smoothly, adjusting his silk tie as if we were meeting in a corporate boardroom. "You were supposed to be over the middle of the country right now, enjoying a glass of champagne while your accounts were quietly restructured. Why did you have to check those damned security cameras?"

"You killed Richard," I stated, my voice shaking with an overwhelming tide of rage. "You and Carla."

Arthur sighed, giving a weary shake of his head. "Richard was a idealist. He stumbled upon an international clearing structure that had been operating quietly through his real estate holdings long before he ever bought the firm. When he threatened to go to the Department of Justice, he threatened to ruin men far more powerful than anyone you have ever met. I offered him a way out. He refused. Carla was simply an efficient solution to a very complicated problem."

"And Elena? You kept a woman chained in a cellar on my property for three years?!"

"Carla’s idea, actually," Arthur replied casually, waving his hand toward the hallway. "Carla was... overly sentimental. She didn't want a body to dispose of near the property while the police were investigating Richard's death, so she kept her hidden. A bit messy, I agree, but it served its purpose."

"And my children?" I stepped forward, my hands curling into tight fists. "You locked five-year-old babies in a dark room!"

"Your children were collateral safety," Arthur said, his eyes darkening into something cold and void of humanity. "They saw Elena today. They are bright children, Victoria. Sophie in particular has her father’s memory. She would have said something eventually."

He motioned to the two armed men beside him. "Find the children. They ran outside."

"NO!" I screamed, grabbing a massive chef's knife from the magnetic block on the counter and stepping into the path of the armed men. "You touch my children and I will kill you!"

Arthur chuckled, pulling a silver fountain pen from his breast pocket. "Victoria, look around you. This entire house—the security system, the hidden wires, the offshore accounts—was designed by my firm. You are completely outmatched. Hand over your biometric thumbprint to confirm the bank wire, and I promise I will make the end painless for you and the kids."

"Never," I spat.

"I thought you'd say that," Arthur said quietly. He glanced at the guard on his right. "Take her down. Don't shoot her—we need her thumb active for the wire confirmation."

The guard stepped forward, reaching out a heavily gloved hand to grab my wrist.

I didn't wait for him to touch me. I swung the chef's knife with all the strength in my upper body, slicing through the thick fabric of his tactical sleeve, cutting deep into his forearm. The guard grunted in pain, dropping his weapon onto the floorboards.

"Elena! Hit the gas valve!" I screamed.

Elena, who had been hiding behind the industrial range, reached out with both hands and yanked the emergency propane bypass valve fully open. A loud, rushing hiss filled the kitchen as raw propane gas flooded out from the six commercial burners.

Before the second guard could raise his weapon, I grabbed a heavy copper pot from the hanging rack and threw it directly into the glass light fixture above the island.

SPARK.

The tiny electrical arc ignited the hovering gas cloud in a sudden, deafening BOOM.

A wall of blue and orange flame exploded across the kitchen, blowing out the glass windows and throwing Arthur and his guards backward onto the floor.

I grabbed Elena by her collar, yanked her through the shattered rear patio door, and tumbled out onto the wet grass of the backyard just as the kitchen alarms began to wail in high-pitched, screeching unison.

"Run!" I pulled Elena toward the dense tree line bordering the property. "To the woods!"

Behind us, black smoke billowed out of the kitchen windows into the afternoon sky, but through the roar of the fire, I could hear Arthur yelling orders to his men.

"Find them! Find the mother and kill her!"
