Chapter 3 - THE COLLAPSE

By 2:00 PM the following afternoon, the storm had arrived.

On the fifty-fifth floor of the Holloway Global Tower, Grant Holloway was sitting behind his massive executive desk, pouring himself a glass of aged scotch.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the city skyline. Sitting across from him on a plush sofa was Victoria Cross—the twenty-six-year-old heiress to Cross Energy, wearing an emerald silk dress and holding a crystal champagne glass.

"So it's completely settled?" Victoria asked, a purring tone in her voice as she smiled at him. "No lingering legal mess from your little art restorer?"

Grant chuckled, leaning back in his leather chair and resting his shoes on the corner of the polished wood. "Clean as a whistle, Victoria. Vance had the papers stamped by a family court judge within minutes. She’s no longer my concern. My legal team is already handling the administrative custody transfer for the children."

"And the press?" Victoria flitted her eyelashes. "What happens if some tabloid finds out your ex-wife is sitting in a public ward?"

"Simple," Grant said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "We issue a press release expressing deep regret over her tragic medical decline, mention that her mental state was fragile prior to delivery, and state that I am providing full financial care for the infants through a private foundation. The public loves a tragic, devoted father."

Before Victoria could reply, the heavy mahogany doors of Grant’s office burst open with a loud slam.

Grant’s senior executive vice president, Richard Hayes, rushed into the room. His tie was askew, his forehead slick with sweat, and his hands held a stack of red-stamped financial notices.

"Grant! We have a nuclear situation!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with panic.

Grant frowned, setting his glass down with an annoyed clack. "Richard, how many times have I told you never to enter my private office without knocking?"

"Forget knocking!" Richard yelled, slamming the documents onto Grant’s desk. "NordTrust Capital just issued an emergency Acceleration Notice! They are calling our entire $500 million credit line! Every single penny! Due in full by 5:00 PM today!"

Grant froze, the color draining from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "What are you talking about?! NordTrust’s underwriting is locked for five years! My contact in Geneva assured me last week that the annual covenant review was a mere formality!"

"They invoked Clause 8-B!" Richard gasped, clutching his chest. "Moral hazard and fraudulent asset conversion! They claim your emergency ex-parte divorce from Clara triggered a material adverse change in your corporate governance profile!"

"That's absurd!" Grant roared, slamming his fists onto the desk as he stood up. "Clara is a nobody! She has no connection to NordTrust! She’s an orphan art restorer sitting in a hospital room!"

Before Richard could answer, Grant’s desk phone began ringing violently. The line flashed red—it was his personal wealth manager at J.P. Morgan.

Grant snatched the receiver. "What?!"

"Grant, listen to me very carefully," the banker’s voice echoed nervously over the speaker. "All of your personal credit lines have just been frozen by order of the Federal Bankruptcy Receiver in Zurich. A temporary trustee has been appointed to oversee Holloway Global’s domestic operations."

"On whose authority?!" Grant screamed, cold sweat beading across his forehead.

"On the authority of the principal beneficiary of the Sterling Estate," the banker replied trembling. "Grant... who the hell is Clara Vance-Sterling?"

Grant’s hand went completely numb. The telephone receiver slipped from his fingers, clattering against the desk.

"Sterling..." Grant whispered, his breath catching in his chest as the room began to tilt. "No... no, that's impossible. Her name was just Clara Vance. She... she restored oil paintings for forty dollars an hour..."

His mobile phone began to vibrate on the desk.

The screen displayed the caller ID: St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital - VIP Suite.

Grant stared at the glowing screen for five horrifying seconds, his chest heaving, his fingers trembling so violently he could barely press the green button.

He raised the phone to his ear with a shaking hand. "Clara?" he whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming terror.

From the quiet comfort of her penthouse suite on the top floor of the hospital—a suite secured two hours earlier when thirty lawyers landed in the city—holding a cup of warm tea while watching her three babies sleep peacefully on a high-definition monitor beside her bed, Clara spoke into the line.

Her voice was soft, calm, and terrifyingly cold.

"Hello, Grant," I said softly. "I believe you said we needed to talk?"
