Chapter 6 - The Prelude

Tuesday, 5:00 PM. Three hours before the gala.

I stood in the guest bedroom of my Lincoln Park townhouse, helping Emily dress.

We had brought her here late Monday night under the guise of a 'mother-daughter spa evening' before the big gala, safely removing her from Michael’s high-rise penthouse without raising his suspicions. Michael had been so busy finalizing his acceptance speech for the gala that he hadn't argued.

Emily sat in front of the vanity mirror, wearing a stunning, dark navy silk maternity gown that draped gracefully over her eight-month bump, completely concealing the high, soft medical brace we had fitted around her bruised torso to ease her rib pain.

Her makeup was pristine, expertly concealing the paleness of her skin, but her hands were trembling as she tried to clip a diamond earring onto her lobe.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice shaking as she looked at my reflection in the mirror. "Are you sure about this? What if Michael realizes something is wrong? What if he hurts us at the hotel?"

I stepped up behind her, taking the diamond earring from her trembling fingers and carefully clipping it onto her ear.

"Michael is an narcissist, sweetie," I said quietly, smoothing her hair over her shoulders. "Right now, he is sitting in his dressing room at the Drake Hotel, admiring his reflection in the mirror, rehearsing how humble he is going to sound when he accepts an award in front of eight hundred people. He is completely blinded by his own vanity."

I pulled a small, sleek black smartphone from my clutch purse and handed it to her.

"What is this?" Emily asked.

"It's a secure burner phone," I instructed softly. "At precisely eight-twenty PM, while Michael is standing near the main stage waiting to be called up, you are going to walk out of the Grand Ballroom through the west service exit. My driver, Frank, will be waiting right beside the service elevator in a black Suburban."

Emily looked up at me, her eyes filling with tears. "And you?"

"I will be sitting at Table One, right in the front row beside Arthur and the Mayor," I said, a cold, serene smile touching my lips. "I want a front-row seat for the show."

"Mom... what if he tries to run?"

"He won't have anywhere to run, sweetie," I said gently, kissing the top of her head. "The federal marshals have already locked down every exit of the Drake Hotel. His private jet charter out of Midway Airport was grounded by the FAA twenty minutes ago. His bank accounts were frozen at four o'clock."

Emily stared at me, a profound, breathtaking look of relief slowly washing over her pale face—a realization that the terrifying monster who had held her captive for two years was finally, truly trapped.

"He'll never lay a hand on you again, Emily," I promised, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Not tonight. Not ever."

My phone chimed in my purse.

A text message from Sarah Jenkins:

Sarah: "Miller and twelve federal agents are in position in the Drake Hotel security control room. All camera feeds intercepted. Media teams notified. We go live at 8:30."

I locked my phone, smoothed down the front of my elegant black velvet evening gown, and pulled my pearl necklace tight around my neck.

"Come, Emily," I said softly, extending my arm to my daughter. "Let's go celebrate your husband's achievements."
