Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

The living room had become a tomb. Rachel was pinned to the sofa by two of my men, her bravado shattered like glass. She looked at me, not as the "unemployed husband," but as the monster the city whispered about in dark rooms.
"You're a monster," she hissed, though her voice shook. "Elena will kill you for this. She’s the one who wanted the 'discipline'."
I sat in the high-backed velvet chair that sat at the head of the room—my chair. I hadn't sat in it for years. "Elena wanted discipline? Or did Elena want to see if I was still watching?"
I pulled out the tablet again. I opened the file that contained the history of the feed. The footage wasn't just from today. It went back months. Every time I had left the house to "buy parts," every time I had gone to the warehouse to manage my shipments, the camera had turned on.
My wife hadn't been on business trips. She had been studying me.
"Kael," I said, not taking my eyes off the screen. "Check the safe in the master bedroom. The one behind the painting of the harbor."
"Sir, it's bio-locked," Kael replied.
"Use the override," I said. "It's my house. Everything in it is mine, including the secrets."
While they worked, I stared at Rachel. She was terrified, but there was a flicker of something else—spite. She thought she was winning, even now. She thought that once Elena arrived, the power dynamic would shift.
"You don't understand the game you're playing, Vance," Rachel said, trying to regain her footing. "You think you’re the boss? You’re just the muscle. Elena is the one who holds the contracts. She’s the one who talks to the syndicate heads. You’re just the man who cleans up the messes."
I stood up and walked toward her. I didn't raise my voice. I leaned down until my nose was inches from hers. "Do you know why I let you mock me for five years, Rachel? Why I let you treat my daughter like a stray animal?"
She remained silent.
"Because I needed to know who was loyal, and who was merely waiting for a weakness," I whispered. "I have destroyed men who thought they were gods. I have dismantled empires that spanned continents. You think my wife is the one in charge? My wife is an employee of my own shadow."

The sound of a heavy door opening in the hallway signaled Kael’s return. He walked into the room holding a thick manila folder and a flash drive.
"She wasn't just watching the girl," Kael said, his voice devoid of emotion. "She was selling the data. To the competition. The feed wasn't just for her entertainment, Boss. It was for the cartel."
