PART 2: THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The bus ride home took almost ninety minutes.
My body was exhausted.
My arms were tired from holding the baby.
The stitches from delivery pulled painfully with every movement.
But the hardest part wasn't the pain.
It was knowing my husband had chosen a restaurant over us.
While I sat on that bus...
Brian was posting pictures.
I saw them one by one.
His mother Denise smiling beside the hotpot.
His sister Tara posing with her expensive handbag.
His brother Evan laughing with friends.
And Brian...
Standing beside the Maybach.
Like nothing happened.
The caption said:
"Family first."
I stared at those words.
Over and over.
Until my hands stopped shaking.
Because I finally understood something.
Brian didn't think he had done anything wrong.
He thought I would forgive him.
Like always.
When I arrived home...
The front door was unlocked.
The lights were on.
My phone was vibrating nonstop.
Eight missed calls from Brian.
Three from Denise.
Two from Tara.
I looked at the screen.
Then I saw Brian's message.
Claire, call me immediately.
The bank has frozen everything.
Someone is asking questions about your family.
What did you do?
I froze.
For the first time in our marriage...
They were not calling to criticize me.
They were not telling me what I did wrong.
They were afraid.
I stepped inside.
Placed the diaper bag down.
And looked around the house.
The house Brian always called "ours."
But the truth was...
It had never really been ours.

Because everything important in our lives had always been controlled by his family.
Except one thing.
The thing they just discovered.
The thing they were terrified of.
My name.
May you like
My signature.
My decision.
