Chapter 3 - The Drive Through the Iron Gates

Easter Sunday dawned bright, crisp, and impossibly clear. The spring air carried the sharp, clean scent of damp earth and blooming dogwoods.
At exactly 4:00 p.m., a convoy of three luxury vehicles—Alejandro’s midnight-blue Bentley Continental GT leading the pack, followed by Elena Sr.’s silver Mercedes Maybach and Valeria’s white Range Rover—turned off the state highway and onto the narrow, winding asphalt of Varela Road.
Inside the Bentley, the mood was light, bordering on celebratory. Alejandro was wearing a new Brioni suit, his gold Rolex catching the afternoon sun through the windshield.
"I still can't believe she had the nerve to invite us to a place called 'Cherry Hills,'" Alejandro chuckled, glancing at the GPS screen on his dashboard. "Must be some dusty old subdivision out in the middle of nowhere. Probably a three-bedroom ranch with a plastic flamingo on the lawn."
"Don't touch anything when we get inside, darling," Elena Sr. advised from the backseat of her Maybach via Bluetooth speaker, her voice tinny and sharp over the car's audio system. "And for heaven's sake, don't use her bathroom. Who knows what kind of sanitation standards she's keeping these days."
As they rounded a sharp bend in the road, the dense pine forest suddenly parted, revealing something that made Alejandro instinctively ease off the gas pedal.
Rising before them was a massive, eight-foot-tall wall of hand-cut fieldstone, flanked by towering brick pillars topped with gas-lit lanterns. Integrated seamlessly into the stone wall were twin gates of wrought iron, forged in intricate patterns of oak leaves and stags, gleaming in the afternoon sun.
Alejandro slowed to a crawl, stopping his Bentley ten feet before the closed gates.
"What is this?" Valeria muttered from the Range Rover behind him, leaning on her horn out of habit. "Is this a private club? Did she give us the wrong address?"
Before Alejandro could reach for his phone, a security kiosk set discreetly into the stone wall slid open. A man in a tailored dark suit, wearing an earpiece and a crisp dress shirt, stepped out into the driveway. He didn't look like a local rent-a-cop; he looked like a federal marshal.
He walked up to the driver's side window of the Bentley. Alejandro rolled it down, a flicker of irritation crossing his face.
"Excuse me, you're blocking the entrance," Alejandro said sharply. "We're guests of Mrs. Varela. Alejandro Mendoza and party."
The officer didn't blink. He tapped a glass screen mounted on his clipboard, his expression utterly neutral. "Mr. Alejandro Mendoza, Mrs. Elena Mendoza, Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Vance. Party of four. Verification confirmed."
He pressed a small remote control in his palm.
With a deep, mechanical groan that vibrated through the chassis of the Bentley, the massive iron gates swung slowly outward, parting to reveal what lay beyond.
For three seconds, absolute silence filled the cabin of the car.
Alejandro stared through the windshield, his jaw slowly dropping open.
Stretching out before them was a private quarter-mile drive lined with perfectly manicured weeping cherries in full bloom. Beyond the trees, sitting atop a gentle rise overlooking a private, spring-fed lake, stood Varela Manor. Built from native gray stone and slate, the grand estate possessed an understated, timeless majesty that dwarfed the Mendozas' flashy, newly constructed McMansion in the suburbs. Crystal-clear fountains bubbled in the grand circular courtyard, and a team of uniformed valets stood quietly by the front entrance, waiting.
Alejandro’s foot slipped off the brake, causing the Bentley to lurch forward a few inches before he slammed it back down.
"This... this has to be a mistake," Alejandro whispered, color draining rapidly from his face. "This isn't her house. She... she must be housesitting for someone. Or she broke into a movie set."
Behind him, Elena Sr.’s Maybach had pulled up right to the gates. The rear window rolled down, and my former mother-in-law leaned out, her sunglasses sliding halfway down her nose as she stared up at the grand estate in speechless horror.
"Alejandro," Elena Sr. hissed, her voice trembling slightly for the first time in her life. "What is the meaning of this? Whose house is this?"

Before Alejandro could answer, the security officer leaned down to the window once more, a faint, professional smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Welcome to the residence of Mrs. Elena Varela," he said clearly. "Please follow the drive to the main entrance. The valets will take your vehicles."
