Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The lock on the ballroom doors was a custom-designed triple-deadbolt system, installed after the 2022 docks dispute when three men in ski masks had tried to scale the east terrace. As the iron bolts slipped into their steel keeps, the atmosphere inside the room transformed from a high-society celebration to an interrogation chamber. The three hundred guests, many of them wearing outfits that cost more than my annual salary, began to look at one another with the frantic, calculating eyes of animals realizing the fence had just been electrified.

"Alessandro, this is a circus!" Senator Thomas Cole, Vanessa’s uncle, stepped forward, his round, red face glistening with sweat beneath his silver hair. He was a man who had spent forty years buying and selling municipal contracts, and he was not accustomed to being locked in rooms by men thirty years his junior. "You are insulting my family. You are insulting the memory of your father, who shook my hand on this alliance before he was put in the ground!"

Alessandro did not turn to look at him. He stood in the center of the floor, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets, his gaze fixed on Vanessa.

"My father is dead, Thomas," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register that made the ice in the champagne buckets rattle. "And his memory does not require me to raise a bastard that belongs to a theatrical supply house."

"I am pregnant!" Vanessa cried, her voice rising to a screech that cracked the polished veneer she had spent her life cultivating. She rushed toward him, her white silk train trailing behind her like a dead shroud. She tried to grab his lapels, but Alessandro stepped back, his movement so smooth and cold she nearly lost her footing on the slick marble. "We have the medical records, Alessandro! Dr. Sterling confirmed it last week! You saw the sonogram!"

"Dr. Sterling’s clinic received a three-hundred-thousand-dollar 'development grant' from the Cole Foundation two days before that appointment," Alessandro said. He did not raise his voice, but the information dropped like a series of small, precise bombs. "I have the ledger entries. I was waiting for the gala to end before I asked you about them, Vanessa. But it seems your timing was... less patient than mine."

The room erupted into a low, frantic murmur.

I held Emma tighter, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I knew what happened to people who witnessed these conversations. In the Moretti world, secrets were not currency; they were leverage, and leverage was only useful if the people who held it could be controlled. I was a maid with a sick child and a dead husband whose death had never been explained. I was the weakest link in the chain.

"Marco," Alessandro said, gesturing to his head of security. "Take my fiancée up to her suite. Search the wardrobe. Bring the box."

"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed as Marco’s heavy hand settled onto her shoulder. She struggled, her expensive diamond bracelet catching the light as she tried to strike the guard. "This is kidnapping! This is illegal search! Uncle Thomas, do something!"

Senator Cole stepped forward again, his hand reaching into his coat for his phone, but before his fingers could clear his pocket, two of Alessandro’s guards stood in his path, their jackets shifted just enough to reveal the black polymer grips of their sidearms.

"The phones in this room are currently jammed, Senator," Alessandro said, his tone almost conversational. "Our private network is the only one operating. If you wish to call the police, you will have to wait until I have finished my housecleaning."

He turned back to me. The winter-frost eyes softened by a fraction of a millimeter as they lingered on Emma’s flushed face.

"Clara," he said.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?" I whispered.

"Take your daughter to the morning room. There is a fire burning there, and the leather sofa is soft. I will have the house doctor look at her fever."

"Mr. Moretti, please," I said, my voice cracking under the weight of my terror. "We can go. We can leave the city tonight. I won't say anything to anyone. I don't want any trouble. I just want her to be safe."

May you like

Alessandro stepped closer, his shadow falling over me like a protective wall. He reached out, his long, scarred finger gently brushing a damp curl away from Emma’s forehead.

"You didn't start this war, Clara," he said, his voice too quiet for the rest of the room to hear. "The Coles did, three years ago when they thought they could use my house to hide their decay. Go to the morning room. You are under my protection now. And in this house, that means more than the law."
