Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

The world didn't just tilt beneath Liam's feet; it shattered into an entirely unrecognizable landscape. He sat in the interrogation room of the Grand Rapids precinct, the concrete walls painted a dull, institutional beige that seemed to shrink around him with every breath.

The note he had found in the courtyard lay on the table between him and Detective Vance, its dry, crisp paper now sealed inside a federal evidence bag.

"Nora’s real name is Elena Vance," Detective Vance said, sliding a thick manila folder across the table. "Six years ago, her mother’s firm, Vance Global, was contracted to handle the logistics security for a major pharmaceutical supply line in Detroit. A shipment of experimental viral stabilizers went missing, valued at nearly forty million dollars on the black market. The company collapsed overnight, Eleanor went into hiding, and her daughter disappeared from all federal tracking systems."

Liam shook his head, his fingers tearing at his hair. "No. No, this is insane. She was a teacher’s assistant at the elementary school. She spent her weekends volunteering at the animal shelter. She cried when she stepped on a snail, Vance! She isn't a criminal!"

"We don't think she was the criminal, Liam," Vance said gently, his tone shifting from suspicion to a grim, professional pity. "We think she was the hiding place. Her mother used her to store the remaining funds from the liquidation. Those three transfers—the $8,000—were an automated trigger. Eleanor’s accounts were flagged by the FBI three months ago. The moment Nora transferred those funds, it alerted both the feds... and the people who were originally ripped off in Detroit."

"The people from the river," Liam breathed, the memory of the silt-covered water trail filling his mind with a sickening clarity.

"The shipping docks along the Grand River are owned by an investment group called The Ironwood Syndicate," Vance explained, tapping a photograph on the table. It showed a massive, rusted barge tied to an abandoned pier near the city limits. "They are the ones who originally funded Eleanor’s security firm, and they are the ones who lost the forty-million-dollar shipment. They didn't care about the money your wife was saving for a house, Liam. They thought those transfers meant Eleanor had finally come out of hiding to meet her daughter."

The door to the interrogation room opened, and Vance’s partner, a young officer named Miller, stepped inside, his face pale. He leaned over to whisper into Vance’s ear, his eyes darting toward Liam with a look of intense gravity.

Vance closed his notebook slowly. He stood up, his leather coat creaking in the silence.

"What is it?" Liam demanded, lunging across the table. "Did you find her? Is she alive?"

"The dive team just pulled a vehicle from the river near the old shipping docks," Vance said, his voice flat and heavy. "A black sedan with stolen plates. Inside the trunk, they found a high-temperature chemical torch, two sets of wet diving gear, and a woman's silver wedding band matching the description of the one left on your balcony."

"And Nora?" Liam choked out, the tears finally breaking through his eyes, burning his skin like acid.

"There was no body in the car, Liam," Vance said. "But they found a large amount of blood on the rear seat. And a shipping manifest from The Ironwood Syndicate, scheduled for a private cargo vessel leaving the Port of Detroit for Montreal at noon today. Your wife wasn't trying to commit suicide when she left that note. She was trying to buy time so they wouldn't look for her until she was already out of the state. But they caught her before she ever reached the bridge."
