PART 2: THE EXPLOSION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The explosion hit like an earthquake.

The marble floor beneath my feet lurched violently.

Every chandelier in the grand foyer swung back and forth as crystal rained onto the polished floor.

The blast wave punched through the mansion, followed by the unmistakable sound of twisting steel and shattering glass.

Someone screamed.

The lights flickered.

Then the fire alarms began wailing.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

Even Ethan Caldwell stood perfectly still.

Then years of instinct took over.

"Protect Mr. Caldwell!"

Four bodyguards immediately surrounded him, drawing their weapons while scanning every entrance.

Another team sprinted toward the underground garage.

Smoke rolled through the hallway seconds later.

The sharp smell of burning gasoline filled the air.

One of the guards shouted into his radio.

"Garage explosion! Lock down the estate! Nobody leaves!"

The mansion erupted into controlled chaos.

Employees ducked behind furniture.

Security teams rushed through every corridor.

Heavy steel doors automatically sealed off sections of the building.

I remained exactly where I was.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

The explosion wasn't supposed to happen yet.

They had said...

After the second ignition.

That meant someone had either discovered the bomb...

Or whoever planted it had decided not to wait.

A deep voice pulled me back to reality.

"Emily."

I looked up.

Ethan was still standing in front of me.

He hadn't walked away.

He hadn't hidden behind his security team.

He was looking directly at me.

"Come with me."

I blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

One bodyguard stepped forward.

"Sir, that's not safe."

Ethan never looked at him.

"It wasn't safe five minutes ago either."

His eyes remained on mine.

"If she hadn't spoken..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Everyone understood.

He would already be dead.

They escorted us into a private conference room deep inside the mansion.

The walls were reinforced steel.

No windows.

No phones except one encrypted line sitting on the table.

I had never even known this room existed.

The heavy door shut behind us with a metallic click.

Only four people remained inside.

Ethan.

His personal attorney.

An older woman named Grace Whitmore, who managed his corporate affairs.

And me.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Grace slid a bottle of water across the table.

"Drink."

I obeyed.

Half the bottle disappeared before I realized how thirsty I was.

Ethan sat across from me.

He folded his hands together.

"Start from the beginning."

His tone wasn't cold anymore.

It was calm.

Professional.

The kind of calm that made people tell the truth.

So I did.

I told him about arriving early.

The open fire door.

Marcus Reed's voice.

The man beneath the SUV.

Every word.

Every detail I could remember.

When I finished, silence settled over the room.

Grace finally spoke.

"Emily..."

I nodded nervously.

"Has anyone else heard you tell this story?"

"No."

"You told no coworkers?"

"No."

"No family?"

I shook my head.

"I came straight to Mr. Caldwell."

She exchanged a quick glance with Ethan.

It lasted less than a second.

But I noticed.

Invisible people always noticed.

Ethan leaned back slightly.

"Do you know what you've done today?"

I looked down.

"I interrupted your morning."

For the first time...

Something unexpected happened.

The corners of his mouth lifted.

Not a smile.

Almost one.

"You saved my life."

The room became quiet again.

I didn't know what to say.

Nobody had ever looked at me the way he was looking at me now.

Not as a maid.

Not as staff.

As a person.

Before either of us spoke again, the conference room door burst open.

A young security officer hurried inside.

His face had gone completely white.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The forensic team examined the SUV."

Everyone waited.

The officer swallowed.

"There was definitely an explosive device."

My stomach dropped.

He continued.

"But..."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"But what?"

"It was detonated remotely."

Grace stood up immediately.

"So whoever planted it knew the schedule changed."

The officer nodded.

"Yes."

"They triggered it after realizing Mr. Caldwell never entered the vehicle."

Silence.

Ethan slowly turned toward me.

Which meant only one thing.

Someone had been watching.

Watching the foyer.

Watching him.

Watching...

Me.

The realization hit all of us simultaneously.

Whoever ordered the assassination now knew exactly why Ethan was still alive.

They knew someone had warned him.

And there weren't many possibilities.

The security footage would show everything.

Including me stepping in front of Ethan.

Grace whispered the words none of us wanted to hear.

"They know her face."

A chill ran through my entire body.

I suddenly thought about my mother.

My brother.

Our apartment.

The buses.

Our routine.

Everything was predictable.

Everything was exposed.

Ethan stood.

"Effective immediately..."

He looked toward the security officer.

"Emily Parker is under my personal protection."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He continued as though I hadn't spoken.

"No one outside this room is to know where she is."

"No employee records."

"No visitor logs."

"No electronic trail."

The officer nodded.

"Yes, sir."

I stood as well.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I can't disappear."

"My mother will panic."

"My brother has school."

"I have responsibilities."

Ethan walked toward me.

For such a feared man, his voice remained surprisingly gentle.

"If you go home today..."

He paused.

"...you won't survive the night."

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to say he was exaggerating.

But deep inside...

I knew he wasn't.

Marcus Reed had already proven he could plant a bomb beneath the most protected vehicle in New York.

What chance did an ordinary housekeeper have?

My voice barely worked.

"My family..."

"We'll protect them too."

I searched his face.

"Why?"

He answered without hesitation.

"Because they became targets the moment you chose to save me."

Tears blurred my vision.

No one had ever said something like that to me before.

Most powerful people protected themselves first.

Ethan Caldwell was already protecting people he'd never met.

Just then, the encrypted phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Grace answered.

Listened.

Her expression changed instantly.

She slowly lowered the receiver.

"What happened?" Ethan asked.

She looked directly at him.

"It's Marcus."

Every muscle in Ethan's body tightened.

"What about him?"

"He's gone."

"Gone?"

Grace nodded.

"He emptied his office."

"His apartment is abandoned."

"His passport was used less than twenty minutes ago."

Silence.

Then came the sentence that made my blood turn to ice.

"He's already leaving New York."

Ethan walked toward the table.

His face became unreadable.

Then he quietly said,

"No..."

Grace looked confused.

"What?"

He turned toward the security monitors mounted on the wall.

Marcus Reed had planned this too carefully.

He wouldn't run.

Not yet.

He would finish what he started.

Ethan slowly looked at me.

His eyes were colder than I'd ever seen them.

"Seal the estate."

"No one enters."

"No one leaves."

Then he spoke the words that changed my life forever.

"Because Marcus Reed isn't escaping."

A long pause followed.

"He's coming back..."

May you like

His gaze shifted toward me.

"...for Emily."
