Chapter 7: The Children They Wanted

The emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Slow.
Blinking.
The kind of lighting that made the hospital look less like a place where lives began…
And more like a place where secrets were buried.
The alarms were silent.
Too silent.
That scared me more.
Chief Mike immediately moved.
“Everyone away from the windows.”
The security guards followed his orders.
Nurses pulled the curtains.
Doctors checked the hallway.
The entire maternity floor transformed in seconds.
A place filled with newborn cries became a controlled emergency zone.
I stood beside the bassinet.
Leo.
Luna.
My babies.
My entire world.
And for the first time since they were born…
I wasn't worried about myself.
I was terrified for them.
Ethan stepped beside me.
“I'm going to protect them.”
I didn't look at him.
Because I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to trust him.
But trust is not a switch.
You don't turn it back on after someone breaks it.
“You already failed once.”
The words came out quietly.
But they hit harder than shouting.
Ethan froze.
“I know.”
His voice cracked.
“I know I did.”
I looked at him.
And for a second, I saw the man I married.
Not the secrets.
Not the lies.
The man.
The father.
The person who held my hand when I was afraid.
But then I remembered.
A secret pregnancy file.
A hidden investigation.
A woman who knew things she shouldn't.
And two babies everyone seemed to want.
Daniel was studying the screen.
“There's something strange.”
Chief Mike looked over.
“What?”
“The message.”
“What about it?”
Daniel pointed.
“She didn't send it to scare us.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
He looked at me.
“She wanted us to find it.”
Everyone went quiet.
Because that meant one thing.
Victoria wasn't hiding.
She was leading us.
“She wants something.”
Chief Mike nodded.
“Or she wants us to follow.”
My phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Again.
Unknown number.
Nobody spoke.
I knew.
It was her.
Chief Mike shook his head.
“No.”
But I answered.
Because running from Victoria wasn't going to protect my children.
The line opened.
No greeting.
Just breathing.
Then:
“Hello, Elena.”
Her voice was calm.
Almost peaceful.
“Where are you?”
I asked.
A small laugh.
“You sound exactly like your father.”
My blood ran cold.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately understood.
“She's trying to provoke you.”
I ignored him.
“What do you want?”
A pause.
Then:
“I want you to stop pretending you are different from them.”
My jaw tightened.
“Different from who?”
“The Sterlings.”
I looked at Ethan.
Then Mrs. Sterling.
Everyone silent.
“You think you are the good one.”
Victoria continued.
“But you benefited from the same system.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You wore the robe.”
“You signed the papers.”
“You decided people's futures.”
I felt anger rise.
“You don't know me.”
“No.”
She sounded sad.
“But I studied you.”
A chill went through me.
“I watched you.”
“Your cases.”
“Your decisions.”
“Your career.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“You stalked me.”
“I researched you.”
“There is a difference.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“There isn't.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“You want to know about the twins?”
Everything stopped.
I looked at Leo and Luna.
“Yes.”
My voice broke.
“Tell me.”
“Then listen carefully.”
Everyone leaned closer.
Victoria spoke slowly.
“The program was created because powerful people wanted something they couldn't buy.”
“What?”
“A perfect heir.”
My stomach turned.
“Sterling Holdings wasn't only investing in medicine.”
She continued.
“They were investing in the future.”
Ethan whispered:
“No…”
Victoria heard him.
“Yes, Ethan.”
A pause.
“Your father knew.”
Mrs. Sterling looked at her son.
“What is she talking about?”
Victoria continued:
“The program studied genetics.”
“Health.”
“Intelligence.”
“Disease resistance.”
I looked at my children.
My beautiful children.
Not experiments.
Not projects.
Not property.
“You are lying.”
My voice shook.
“Are you?”
She replied.
“Look at the records.”
Daniel was already searching.
His fingers moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?”
Chief Mike asked.
Daniel turned the laptop.
A file.
Encrypted.
But visible.
GENESIS PROJECT
PRIMARY CARRIER: ELENA STERLING
GENETIC MATERIAL: CONFIRMED
My knees almost gave out.
Ethan caught me.
I pushed him away.
“Explain.”
I looked at him.
“Now.”
He looked destroyed.
“I didn't know.”
“Stop saying that.”
My voice broke.
“You always didn't know.”
Victoria spoke again.
“And that is the saddest part.”
Everyone listened.
“Ethan wasn't the mastermind.”
A pause.
“He was the child.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Victoria continued:
“Your father chose you years ago.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The program didn't begin with the twins.”
The room became silent.
“The first successful subject…”
She paused.
“Was you.”
Ethan stepped back.
“No.”
Mrs. Sterling covered her mouth.
“My son?”
Victoria answered:
“Yes.”
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly Ethan wasn't just the husband who hid secrets.
He was someone who had been lied to his entire life.
I looked at him.
And for the first time...
I understood why he was afraid.
Then Victoria said the words that destroyed everything:
“The twins were never created to continue the Sterling family.”
A pause.
“They were created to replace Ethan.”
Ethan's face went white.
“What?”
“The program failed.”
Victoria whispered.
“Because Ethan grew up human.”
The line crackled.
“And the people behind Genesis decided…”
A pause.
“Children would be easier to control.”
The hospital doors suddenly unlocked.
A soft sound.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Chief Mike turned.
“Everyone stay back.”
The maternity hallway door opened slowly.
A figure stepped inside.
Not Victoria.
Someone else.
Someone wearing hospital clothes.
The nurse closest to the door gasped.
“Doctor?”
The man removed his mask.
And everyone froze.
Because we knew him.
The pediatric specialist who had treated Leo and Luna since birth.
The doctor who checked them every day.
The doctor who told me they were healthy.
He looked at me.
And said:
“Judge Sterling.”
A pause.
“I am sorry.”
My heart stopped.
“Sorry for what?”
He looked at the babies.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Because your children were never supposed to leave this hospital alive.”
