Chapter 4 - The Public Reckoning

By noon the following day, the story had broken across major news outlets like a tidal wave.

Leo Vance was not merely a wealthy individual; he was the primary shareholder of a publicly traded tech giant valued at over twelve billion dollars. When a corporate founder files federal criminal charges against his own mother and sister for multi-million-dollar fraud and grand larceny, the media apparatus moves with terrifying speed.

Outside the iron gates of our Lake Forest estate, dozens of news vans, photojournalists, and broadcast reporters had set up a permanent encampment.

Agnes and Chloe had spent the night sleeping in the backseat of an old, rusted sedan belonging to one of Chloe’s superficial socialite friends, who had reluctantly picked them up from the curb after their credit cards were declined at every luxury hotel in downtown Chicago.

Having nowhere else to turn, and convinced that Leo would eventually buckle under public pressure, Agnes had made the catastrophic mistake of calling a press conference in front of the estate gates at two o'clock in the afternoon.

From the second-floor library window, shielded behind blacked-out curtains, Leo and I watched the spectacle unfold on a live television broadcast.

Agnes stood before a cluster of microphones, dressed in a cheap, rumpled track suit she had borrowed, her hair unwashed, weeping tears into a crumpled tissue. Chloe stood beside her, wearing dark sunglasses, trying to project the image of a victimized, wealthy heiress.

“My son, Leo Vance, has been brainwashed!” Agnes wailed to the cameras, her voice trembling with practiced theatricality. “He has abandoned his own mother! He had his private security thugs throw us out into the street in the middle of the night without a single dollar! All because of his cruel, calculating wife, Maya, who has systematically isolated him from his blood family!”

The reporters thrust their microphones forward, shouting questions over one another.

“Mrs. Vance! What about the federal indictment filed by Vance Technologies this morning?”

“Is it true you embezzled over six million dollars?”

“Did you forge documents to steal the Lake Forest estate?”

“It’s all lies!” Chloe shrieked into the cameras, pushing her way forward. “Maya fabricated those documents! She’s been leeching off my brother’s success for years! She faked an illness this week just to get Leo to fly back from Tokyo and attack us! She’s a sociopath who wants our family’s money all to herself!”

At that exact moment, the heavy iron gates of the estate slowly swung open.

The crowd of reporters gasped, rushing forward with their cameras raised. A sleek black limousine rolled out of the driveway, stopping ten feet from the podium where Agnes and Chloe stood.

The rear door opened. Leo stepped out, dressed in an immaculate black suit, looking tall, formidable, and entirely unbothered by the flashing cameras.

Agnes’s eyes lit up with sudden, arrogant triumph. She genuinely believed that Leo had come out to publicly apologize, to save face before the media, and to usher his mother back into the mansion.

“Oh, my sweet boy!” Agnes cried out loudly for the cameras, rushing toward him with her arms open. “I knew you’d come to your senses! Tell these people the truth! Tell them your wife manipulated you!”

Leo didn't move an inch. He didn't open his arms. He simply raised his right hand, signaling his security detail to step between him and his mother.

Behind Leo, two dark, unmarked Ford Explorers pulled up to the curb, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently through the rain. Four men in dark suits with federal badges hanging from their belts stepped out of the vehicles.

The lead agent walked directly toward Agnes and Chloe, pulling a folded paper from his jacket.

“Agnes Vance? Chloe Vance?” the agent asked calmly.

Agnes blinked, her smile freezing on her face. “What... what is this?”

“I am Special Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the officer announced loudly, his voice easily picked up by the dozens of news microphones surrounding them. “I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. You are being placed under arrest for federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.”

Chloe let out a blood-curdling shriek as an officer grabbed her arm, spinning her around and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. “Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who I am?! Leo! Tell them to stop! Leo! Help me!”

Agnes backed away in sheer terror, tripping over the curb and falling hard onto the damp pavement. “Leo! I’m your mother! You can't let them arrest me! I gave you life!”

Leo walked slowly over to where his mother lay on the wet ground. He leaned down, his face inches from hers, his eyes completely devoid of human affection.

“You gave me life, Agnes,” Leo whispered, his voice picking up clearly on a nearby boom microphone, broadcasting his words live to millions of homes across the country. “And you let my child die on a kitchen floor so you could drink a cup of tea. You are not my mother. You are a criminal being brought to justice.”

The federal officers pulled Agnes to her feet, pulling her arms behind her back and clicking the handcuffs into place.

As the reporters shouted frantically, cameras flashing from every angle, Agnes and Chloe were shoved into the back of the federal vehicles like common criminals, their cries of rage and desperation echoing down the tree-lined street before the doors slammed shut.

Leo turned back toward the estate gates, never looking back at the flashing lights.

He walked back inside the house, closing the heavy oak doors behind him, leaving the wreckage of his past permanently outside.
