Part 5: The Midnight Escape

Dr. Elena Reyes moved with quiet urgency, her hands steady despite the risk. “The transfer order is signed under a false specialist request. We have a narrow window—twenty minutes before Victoria’s people notice.” She helped Chloe into a wheelchair, carefully adjusting the oxygen portable unit and IV stand. Every movement sent sharp pain through Chloe’s stitched abdomen, but she bit back the cries.

The hallway lights hummed overhead as they slipped out of the VIP wing. Sarah waited at the service elevator, her face pale but determined. “The story is uploading now. Anonymous sources, recordings snippets I saved earlier. It’s blowing up on small forums. We need to get you to St. Mary’s across town. My contact there will hide you.”

Chloe clutched her belly, feeling another strong kick. “What about Alexander?”

Sarah hesitated. “He’s fighting with his mother in the lobby. Security is everywhere.”

The elevator descended. Chloe’s heart pounded louder than the mechanical whir. At the basement level, a nondescript van waited near the loading dock. Dr. Reyes helped her in. “I’ll stay behind and misdirect them. Good luck.”

As the van pulled away into the rainy night, Chloe allowed herself one moment of relief. Then sirens wailed in the distance. “They know,” Sarah muttered, accelerating.

Back in the hospital, chaos erupted. Lady Victoria stormed through the empty room, her designer heels cracking against the floor. “Find her! Now!” Alexander stood frozen, phone in hand, watching the first news alerts pop up on his screen: “Sterling Heir Scandal: Secret Pregnancy and Coercion Claims Emerge.”

“Mother, this is spiraling,” he said, voice strained. “The board is calling. Eliza’s family is furious.”

Victoria whirled on him. “This is your fault. That girl and her little friend think they can play with us. Call our lawyers. Crush the story. And bring my grandson back.”

Meanwhile, the van weaved through backstreets. Chloe’s pain intensified; contractions were starting too early. “Sarah… something’s wrong.”

“Hang on. We’re close.” Sarah’s knuckles were white on the wheel.

They reached St. Mary’s under cover of darkness. A side entrance, a trusted doctor waiting. Chloe was rushed into a quiet room. Monitors confirmed the baby was stable but stressed. “We can delay labor with medication,” the doctor assured her. “But you need rest.”

Hours passed in fitful sleep. When Chloe woke, Alexander was there—somehow having tracked them. He looked wrecked, rain-soaked coat, eyes red.

“How did you—”

“I still have friends who care about me, not just the name.” He knelt beside her. “Chloe, I left. I told Mother I’m done playing her games. I want you. I want our son. We can run together.”

Tears streamed down her face. For a moment, she believed him. His kiss was desperate, full of the passion that had started everything. But Sarah burst in. “It’s a trap. Victoria’s men are surrounding the building. He led them here!”

Alexander’s face crumpled. “No… I didn’t know. They must have followed me.”

Betrayal cut deeper than any surgical knife. Chloe pushed him away. “Get out. I trusted you twice. Never again.”

Security alarms blared. Sarah helped Chloe toward a hidden staff exit while Alexander tried to block the incoming guards, buying precious seconds. “Go! I’ll hold them!”

In the alley, Sarah flagged down a waiting car arranged by her journalist network. As they sped away, Chloe looked back. Flashing lights illuminated the scene—Alexander arguing fiercely with his mother’s men, fists flying.

The car headed toward the outskirts, toward safe houses and underground legal aid. But Victoria’s reach was long. A black luxury SUV appeared in the rearview mirror, closing fast.

Chloe whispered to her son, “We’re not safe yet, little fighter. But we’re free.”

The rain poured harder, washing the city clean while their lives hung in the balance. Headlines were exploding online. The Sterling empire was cracking under public scrutiny. Yet the matriarch’s shadow loomed larger than ever.

Victoria, from her penthouse, stared at the screens with icy rage. “They want war? They’ll get one.”
