PART 4 The Truth Greg Tried To Bury

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Clara.

Not even Greg.

The hallway lights hummed above us, casting a cold white glow over his face.

And that smile…

That calm, confident smile…

was the same one I had seen when Clara first arrived.

The smile of someone who believed he was untouchable.

He held the stolen document between two fingers.

“Interesting,” Greg said quietly.

His eyes moved from Clara to me.

“I always knew you were emotional, Clara.”

He tilted his head.

“But I didn’t think you were stupid.”

Clara pressed herself against the bed, one hand protecting her stomach.

“You broke into a hospital room.”

Greg laughed softly.

“Broke in?”

He looked around.

“This is my wife.”

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

Like he wasn’t talking about a person.

Like he was talking about property.

I stepped forward.

“You need to leave.”

Greg looked at me.

For the first time, his expression showed irritation.

“You really don’t understand what’s happening here.”

“No,” I replied.

“I understand perfectly.”

I pointed toward Clara.

“She is your patient’s wife.”

“She is a pregnant woman who came here injured.”

“And you are the reason she’s afraid.”

His jaw tightened.

Then he smiled again.

But this time it looked forced.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Am I?”

I reached for the security button beside the bed.

Greg immediately changed.

The calm disappeared.

“Don’t.”

One word.

A command.

And Clara flinched.

That told me everything.

This man didn’t just scare her.

He trained her to obey.

I pressed the button.

The security alert activated.

Greg took one step forward.

“You don’t know what she is capable of.”

Clara looked up.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Greg looked at her.

And suddenly, he started laughing.

A cold, cruel laugh.

“Did you really think I would be the only one exposed?”

The room went silent.

I looked at Clara.

She looked confused.

Terrified.

“Greg…”

He held up the document.

“You want the truth?”

He tossed it onto the bed.

“Fine.”

Clara stared at the papers.

Her hands trembled as she picked them up.

I watched her eyes move across the page.

Then her face turned white.

“What is this?”

No one answered.

She looked at Greg.

“What did you do?”

His expression hardened.

“You lied to me.”

Clara shook her head.

“I never—”

“Yes, you did.”

His voice became sharper.

“You never told me the baby might not be mine.”

The room went still.

I looked at Clara.

Her mouth opened.

But no words came out.

Greg continued.

“For months I watched you.”

“Your messages.”

“Your appointments.”

“Everything.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“You were spying on me?”

“I was protecting myself.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

He had hurt her.

Controlled her.

Terrified her.

And somehow convinced himself he was the victim.

But then Clara whispered something that changed everything.

“You already knew.”

Greg froze.

“What?”

She looked at him through tears.

“You already knew the baby was yours.”

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Because Greg’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I noticed.

Clara noticed too.

“You knew,” she repeated.

“You knew the entire time.”

Greg’s jaw tightened.

Then the door opened.

Dr. Hale entered with security behind him.

“Mr. Bennett.”

Greg looked over.

“You’re going to leave now.”

But Greg didn’t move.

Instead, he looked at Clara.

And his voice became strangely calm.

“Tell them.”

Nobody spoke.

“Tell them what happened before we got married.”

Clara’s face drained of color.

I looked between them.

“What is he talking about?”

Clara closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Two years ago…”

Her voice broke.

“I was pregnant.”

The room went silent.

Dr. Hale looked confused.

Greg smiled.

“Go on.”

Clara’s tears fell.

“I lost the baby.”

She looked at him.

“Because of you.”

The smile disappeared from Greg’s face.

I felt the air leave the room.

“What?”

Clara continued.

“You were angry because I wanted to leave.”

“You pushed me.”

Greg immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.”

But nobody believed him anymore.

Clara touched her stomach.

“And after that, I was told I couldn’t have children.”

Her voice shook.

“Until I found out I was pregnant again.”

She looked at the baby monitor.

“And he became obsessed.”

Everything clicked.

The controlling behavior.

The fear.

The device.

The lies.

Greg wasn’t protecting the baby.

He was afraid of losing control.

The security officers stepped closer.

Greg finally realized.

He was trapped.

For the first time all night…

he looked scared.

“Clara,” he said softly.

Almost like he was trying to become the man she once loved.

“I did everything because I love you.”

She stared at him.

And the sadness in her eyes was worse than anger.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“You did everything because you wanted to own me.”

The words destroyed him.

Security moved forward.

Greg was taken away.

And as he disappeared down the hallway, Clara finally collapsed.

I caught her before she fell.

The doctor rushed to check the baby.

A few minutes later, he smiled.

“The baby is okay.”

Clara covered her face.

Crying.

Not from fear this time.

From relief.

Weeks later, Clara gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She named her Hope.

Because after everything…

she needed a reminder.

That even after someone tried to bury you…

you can still survive.

May you like

And sometimes the person who thinks they have complete control…

is only one truth away from losing everything.
