PART 2: The Hidden Cabin Olivia Never Told Me About

For several seconds, none of us moved.

The wind passed through the trees, making the branches scrape against each other like whispers.

The twins held my hands tightly.

Too tightly.

Like they believed letting go meant something terrible would happen.

I looked toward the woods again.

Nothing.

Just shadows.

Just trees.

But my instincts told me otherwise.

I had spent years in business meetings where people lied with perfect smiles. I had negotiated with men who could hide millions of dollars behind a calm expression.

But those little girls?

They weren't pretending.

They were genuinely afraid.

"Emma," I said softly, lowering myself to their level. "Who is in the woods?"

The girl's lips trembled.

She looked at Ella.

Then back at me.

"Nobody."

But the way she said it told me everything.

She was lying.

Not because she wanted to.

Because someone had taught her to.

I glanced at the cottage.

"Let's get inside first."

The girls followed immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Children shouldn't trust strangers this quickly.

They should run.

They should hide.

Unless they had been waiting for someone.

Unless Olivia had prepared them.

Inside the cottage, everything was exactly how I remembered.

The old wooden table.

The fireplace.

The faded photos on the shelves.

One photo caught my attention.

Olivia and me.

Standing outside the cottage.

She was laughing.

My arm around her.

A version of myself I barely recognized.

Happy.

I looked away.

The pain came too quickly.

"Did Olivia live here?"

Emma nodded.

"She brought us food."

My heart skipped.

"What?"

Ella sat quietly on the couch, staring at the floor.

"She came at night."

"When?"

"Before."

Before.

That single word made my stomach tighten.

Before what?

Before she died?

I walked closer.

"Girls, I need you to tell me everything."

They looked at each other again.

Like they were sharing a conversation without speaking.

Finally, Emma whispered:

"Mom said not to tell anyone."

"Why?"

"Because bad people would find us."

I felt anger rising.

"Who are the bad people?"

The twins said nothing.

Then Ella reached into the pocket of her dirty dress.

She pulled out a small object.

A necklace.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized it instantly.

It was Olivia's.

A small silver mountain pendant she wore every day.

I had buried her wearing one just like it.

I took it carefully.

"Where did you get this?"

Ella looked at me.

"Olivia gave it to us."

My hands began shaking.

That was impossible.

Completely impossible.

Unless...

No.

I refused to let myself think it.

"Girls, when was the last time you saw Olivia?"

The room became painfully quiet.

Emma answered.

"Yesterday."

The word hit me like a punch.

I stood frozen.

"What?"

"Yesterday," she repeated.

My mind raced.

A thousand explanations.

A thousand impossible thoughts.

Could someone have lied about Olivia's death?

Could she have survived?

No.

I saw the hospital records.

I saw the funeral.

I saw the grave.

So what was happening?

Then Ella whispered:

"Not Olivia."

She looked down.

"Her friend."

My confusion deepened.

"Her friend?"

The girls nodded.

"She said Olivia wanted you to know."

"Know what?"

Emma looked toward the back of the cottage.

"The truth."

A chill ran through me.

"The truth about what?"

Neither answered.

Instead, Emma stood.

Walked toward a cabinet near the fireplace.

She pushed aside an old blanket.

Behind it was a small wooden box.

My heart started pounding.

Because I knew that box.

Olivia kept one everywhere.

She called them memory boxes.

I had never opened them.

She always told me:

"Some things have to be found at the right time."

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside were papers.

Photographs.

A small flash drive.

And an envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Ethan.

My breathing stopped.

Olivia's handwriting.

Impossible.

I touched the letters like they might disappear.

The girls watched silently.

"What is this?"

Emma whispered:

"Olivia said you would only open it when you found us."

My hands shook as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The first line destroyed me.

My love, if you are reading this, it means I was right. Someone tried to make sure you never found the truth.

I stopped breathing.

I kept reading.

Ethan,

I know you think you lost me because of an illness.

But that is not the whole story.

My hands went cold.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Olivia continued:

I discovered something about the people around us. Something dangerous. I couldn't tell you because I didn't know who I could trust.

I looked up at the twins.

The girls were watching me.

Waiting.

The next sentence made my heart race.

I found these children alone. Their mother was trying to protect them. She asked me to help.

I stared at the page.

The twins.

Olivia knew them.

But why?

The letter continued:

If anything happens to me, keep them safe. They are connected to the truth.

A sound interrupted me.

A car door slamming outside.

The girls immediately froze.

Their faces drained of color.

"He's here," Ella whispered.

I stood.

"Who?"

Emma grabbed my sleeve.

The fear in her eyes answered before her mouth did.

"The man Olivia was running from."

I looked toward the window.

A black SUV had stopped outside the cottage.

The headlights cut through the darkness.

May you like

And someone stepped out.

Someone who knew exactly where to find us.
