PART 3: MY SISTER'S FINAL MESSAGE

The lawyer placed a small box on the table.

"There is one more thing."

My husband looked nervous.

"What?"

The lawyer opened the box.

"Emily left a recording."

I stared at him.

"A recording?"

He nodded.

"It was meant to be played if Claire ever needed protection."

The room held its breath.

Then he pressed a button.

My sister's voice filled the room.

Soft.

Weak.

But clear.

"If you are hearing this..."

"It means I am no longer there to protect my daughter."

My eyes filled with tears.

Emily continued.

"I know someone may try to take what belongs to Claire."

"I know some people will see her as a key to money."

"But Claire is not an inheritance."

"She is my child."

My husband looked away.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Then my sister said:

"The person who truly loves Claire will never make her afraid."

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

The lawyer handed me a folder.

"From today forward, you are Claire's legal guardian."

I looked at my niece.

She was still standing quietly.

Too quietly.

I knelt in front of her.

"Claire..."

She looked at me.

I reached out my hand.

"No one will hurt you again."

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she ran into my arms.

And finally...

She cried.

Not the silent tears of fear.

The tears of a child who finally felt safe.

But just when I thought it was over...

The lawyer spoke again.

"There is another matter."

I turned around.

He looked at my husband.

May you like

"He didn't only hide the letter."

"He hid something else."
