Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By Monday morning, the legal legal hammer fell with crushing force.
Judge Margaret Vance—no relation, much to Beatrice’s immense dismay—signed every single emergency petition Eleanor filed. By 9:00 AM, process servers accompanied by two uniformed sheriff's deputies located Beatrice, Julian, and Richard at the Five-Star Grand Hotel downtown, serving them with emergency restraining orders, custody suspensions, and formal summonses for child abuse charges.
The hotel lobby, filled with wealthy local executives and socialites, watched in absolute fascination as Beatrice erupted into a screaming, manic meltdown, shrieking that she was an aristocratic matriarch while deputies formally served her with criminal assault charges.
At 2:00 PM, my phone rang. It was Detective Marcus Vance from the Special Victims Unit.
"Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Sloan," Detective Vance said, his voice deep and stern. "I've reviewed the medical reports, Dr. Lin's affidavit, and the nanny-cam footage you provided. It's sickening. The District Attorney has formally authorized a warrant for Beatrice Vance's arrest for felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon."
"When will she be arrested?" I asked.
"Within the hour," Detective Vance replied. "However, I'm calling to warn you. Julian Vance spent the morning at the magistrate's office filing a counter-claim. He is claiming that you are an unfit mother, alleging that you have a history of severe psychological instability, and that you inflicted that welt on Harper yourself in a framed setup to steal his family's assets."
I let out a cold, bitter laugh. "He's desperate."
"He's playing dirty," Vance agreed. "He brought two signed affidavits from relatives—his brother Richard and his sister-in-law Clara—stating that they have witnessed you being verbally and physically abusive toward Harper in the past. It's completely fabricated, of course, but it's designed to muddy the waters in the custody hearing tomorrow."
"Let them bring their fake witnesses," I said, my teeth grinding together. "I have six years of unedited family event recordings stored on my drive. Every holiday dinner, every birthday party where Beatrice called my daughter weak and where Clara ignored her own son's bullying behavior. I have the receipts, Detective."
"Good," Vance said. "Hold onto them. I'll see you in court tomorrow for the arraignment."
That evening, as I prepared dinner for Harper, a subtle knock sounded at the back door. I checked the camera feed on my phone before opening it.
Standing on my back patio, looking nervous and wrapped in a dark coat, was Clara—Richard’s wife, mother of the spoiled eight-year-old Riker who had twisted Harper’s doll.
I unlocked the back door, keeping the safety chain engaged. "What do you want, Clara? You're violating a restraining order by proxy just by standing here."
Clara looked around frantically, pulling her collar up around her face. "Sloan, please... just let me talk to you for two minutes. Richard doesn't know I'm here. Nobody knows."
I studied her pale, panicked face for a moment, then unhooked the chain and opened the door six inches, standing firmly in the doorway. "Speak. You have two minutes."
"Sloan... please, you have to drop the charges against Beatrice," Clara begged, her voice trembling. "Richard is going insane. He’s threatening to cut Julian out of the family business entirely if he can't control you! And Richard is taking his anger out on me and Riker!"
"That sounds like a Richard problem, Clara," I said coldly. "Not a me problem."
"You don't understand!" Clara cried out softly, tears springing to her eyes. "Beatrice controls everything! She holds the trust purse strings! If Beatrice goes to prison, the trust gets frozen by the corporate board until the criminal case is resolved! Richard won't get his quarterly distribution! We won't be able to pay our mortgage or Riker's private school tuition!"
I stared at Clara, feeling a profound mixture of disgust and pity. "Your mother-in-law whipped my six-year-old child with a leather belt while your son watched and cheered, Clara. And your first concern is your son's private school tuition?"
"Riker is just a boy!" Clara defended defensively. "He was taught by Beatrice that he's special! He didn't mean any harm!"
"He's a bully in the making, Clara, because you and your husband are raising him to be just like Beatrice and Julian," I spat. "You signed a false affidavit today claiming I abused my daughter. You lied to a judge under oath."
Clara flinched, looking away in shame. "Richard forced me to sign it! He said if I didn't help protect Beatrice, he would divorce me and take Riker away!"
"Then you are a coward," I said, stepping back into the kitchen. "You sacrificed my innocent child to protect your comfortable lifestyle and your abusive husband. You are just as guilty as Beatrice."
"Sloan, please!" Clara whimpered, reaching out to grasp the door frame. "Is there nothing that will make you stop this?!"
May you like
"Tell Richard and Julian that tomorrow morning in court, I am not just asking for custody," I declared, my voice echoing off the kitchen tiles. "I am going to destroy every single one of you."
I slammed the back door shut, locked it, and pulled the blinds closed, leaving Clara weeping silently in the dark.
