Chapter 4 - The Legal Blitzkrieg

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, Chris’s downtown law office on the fourteenth floor of the Plaza Tower had been transformed into a tactical war room.

Four people sat around the massive glass conference table: myself, Chris, a senior family law litigator named Victoria Vance, and Detective Robert Miller from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit.

Spread across the table were the contents of Sarah’s purple pencil box, alongside the hospital forensic medical report, the ER photos of Sarah’s injuries, and the complete financial audits provided by Chris’s firm.

Detective Miller—a veteran investigator with graying hair and dark, steel-colored eyes—finished reading the hospital report. He closed the folder with a heavy, decisive thud.

"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, addressing me directly. "The physical evidence here is unambiguous. The hairline fracture to your daughter’s ulna, combined with the laceration to her forehead and the witness statement from your neighbor, meets the threshold for First-Degree Felony Child Endangerment, Aggravated Domestic Assault, and Depraved Mind Neglect."

"Where are they now?" I asked, resting my hands flat against the table.

"Our license plate recognition network picked up Norma Richard’s white Lincoln Navigator crossing into northern Wisconsin at 1:15 AM last night," Detective Miller revealed. "They are currently registered at a luxury lakefront resort near Hayward, Wisconsin."

Victoria Vance, the senior family law attorney, leaned forward. She was a woman in her late fifties with sharp silver hair, dark eyes, and a reputation for dismantling high-net-worth fraudsters in court.

"They think they are safe across state lines," Victoria stated coldly. "They assume this is a messy domestic dispute that will take months to process through civil court. They are severely mistaken."

Victoria pulled a thick stack of legal petitions toward her.

"We are filing three simultaneous actions within the hour," Victoria outlined smoothly. "First, an Emergency Ex Parte Motion for Sole Legal and Physical Custody of Sarah, terminating all parental rights for Melissa Vance effective immediately based on severe child abuse and abandonment."

"Second," Chris added, stepping up to the glass whiteboard, "a federal emergency freeze order on all accounts associated with Veritas Holdings, co-signed by the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division based on the ledger entries found in Norma's notebook."

I looked at the black notebook sitting in the middle of the table. "What exactly was in that notebook, Chris?"

Chris smiled grimly. "Norma Richard wasn't just stealing your money, Jamie. For the past four years, she has been running a fraudulent real estate investment syndicate across Minnesota and Wisconsin, using fake corporate entities to launder offshore funds. Melissa was helping her falsify tax returns. The four hundred thousand dollars they stole from your home equity line was meant to pay off a federal audit that was closing in on them next week."

I stared at the notebook in absolute shock. "So Sarah took..."

"Sarah took their master ledger," Chris said triumphantly. "The single piece of evidence that connects Norma and Melissa to wire fraud, tax evasion, and RICO conspiracy. Without this notebook, they have no defense. With it, they are facing fifteen years in federal prison."

Detective Miller stood up, adjusting his gun belt beneath his jacket.

"I’m contacting the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department," Detective Miller announced. "We have an extraditable felony arrest warrant signed by a district judge as of twenty minutes ago. They will be taken into custody before sunset."

I stood up, looking Detective Miller directly in the eye.

"I want to be there," I said.

Victoria Vance looked up, raising an eyebrow. "James, legally, you don't need to be present for the execution of an arrest warrant."

"I’m not going there to interfere," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. "I’m going there so my wife sees my face when she realizes her fake little world has completely collapsed."

Chris grabbed his suit jacket from the back of his chair. "I’m driving."
